I was chatting with some friends during the weekend. Somehow or other, we got onto the subject of Alberta. So I was wondering...

What happens to Alberta when the oil is gone?

We came up wondering the scenario that would be Alberta if they either ran out of oil(unlikely) or the world switches to better sources, killing the oil industry(also unlikely).

So while this clearly won't happen in our lifetime, what would happen if either of these scenarios became reality? What would happen to Alberta?

Would the power shift further west into B.C. or head back East to Ontario?

What do you guys think?

Remember, this is purely hypothetical.

Youre right. with the Oilsands and other avenues opening up its unlikely we will EVER run out of resources but if the poswer shifts and "alternative" fuel sources become the norm I wont be worried......

I'll be retired and living in BC.

Beautiful pic BTW.... *yoink*

Well, if they are smart, they'll model themselves after what Texas has done. Texas has moved itself to the high tech industries and making itself really friendly to the oil business. This has made the Texas economy fair better than other states.

Alternativly, they could not invest into other industries and go through a very tough times like Detroit (because they heavily relied on the auto industry).

Well, the world may switch to fuel cells or electric cars or hydrogen (or whatever), but oil has a lot of other uses, like lubricants, medicine, fertilizer, plastics, etc.

I'm sure someone will someday invent something that replaces it, but it is very ubiquitous and I foresee the human race using oil for a long time. Of course, if we take transportation and heating out of the mix, the price will drop quite low, but it will still be needed, if not by us then by the 3rd world who likely won't be able to afford fusion energy (or whatever).
