Oh, the Leopards are obosolete, but seeing as how the Taliban doesn't have MBTs, it won't make a difference...

It will be interestng to see what creative roles the Canadian army can devise for the Leopard I tanks in Afghanistan. Tanks are intended to kill tanks. Obviously the Taliban have no tanks, at least not right now, so the traditional role is out. Probably they'll be used as heavily armoured bulldozers, to knock down mud fortifications. Tanks, however, are anything but invulnerable. Usually they're given infantry protection to keep the other side's guys from exploiting the tanks vulnerabilities.

The Afghans know about fighting tanks. They learned all about that when they took on the Soviets. It's hard to say who will come out on top in this inevitable clash

By the way, the picture you've posted is of the much more modern, more capable Leopard II tank. We operate the much older Leopard I tank that we bought, second hand, from Germany when Pierre Trudeau was still P.M. i wonder how they've held up to the years of wear and tear and how they'll be affected by the hot, dusty conditions in Afghanistan.

when was the last time you have seen a piece of German equipment which was not the best. Creating the missile was not the best of their weapons. We also would have had better equipment and less dead pilots and soldiers if it wasnt for Chretiens first act as Prime Minister when he cancelled the helicopters and mobile vehicles with heavier armer plating to keep the soldiers inside from getting killed. I guess money is more important. He learned very well from a Liberal Prime Minister (no name attached) who thought it was better to make up hundreds of programs and increase taxes. And I havent even mentioned that he scoffed at Joe Clark when he said he would increase gas taxes by 3 cents ,and then when elected increased it 15 times. The liberals gave us our first deficit . Then Martin as finance minister cuts payments to the provinces to pay it off. Then the provinces download it to the municipal tax payer. Are you all getting the picture. Conservatives care about what equipment we carry when its needed. And thats my 2 cents worth.
