North of 49

I was listening to the radio the other day, and I heard a story of a woman who was installing a flourescent lightbulb in her daughters room. Unfortunately, it slipped and broke on the floor. Not knowing how to dispose of it(because flourescent lightbulbs have mercury in them), she calls the manufacturers. They direct her to a bunch of people who direct her else where, etc. Finally, she gets to talk to the right people, and she eventually has to bring in HazMat guys who want to charge $2000 to clean her daughters room of mercurial residue.

She doesn't have that kind of money, and so now her daughter's room is sealed off and the daughter is sleeping on the couch. All because a flourescent lightbulb broke on the floor. Also, if they blow out, it causes the same problems.

So the long and short of it is, flourescent lightbulbs have to be taken to a hazardous waste facility, whereas old lightbulbs you could just throw in the garbage. There is no other way to dispose of compact flourescent lightbulbs. They must go to a hazardous/toxic waste facility.

Scary shit or what?

So, is banning all incandescent lightbulbs really that genius and good of an idea? I leave you all to decide.

Last night(Tuesday April 24) on the Daily Show, they Senator John McCain on the program. It was a fairly good debate, and I could see where both of them were coming from, but holy shit. Jon Stewart was fucking awesome in that!

If someone can find a link for it, I'd appreciate it very much. I've rarely seen Jon Stewart get so many thunderous applauses like that...

I was chatting with some friends during the weekend. Somehow or other, we got onto the subject of Alberta. So I was wondering...

What happens to Alberta when the oil is gone?

We came up wondering the scenario that would be Alberta if they either ran out of oil(unlikely) or the world switches to better sources, killing the oil industry(also unlikely).

So while this clearly won't happen in our lifetime, what would happen if either of these scenarios became reality? What would happen to Alberta?

Would the power shift further west into B.C. or head back East to Ontario?



What do you guys think?

Are they seriously making a Shrek 4? I mean come on, there are only so many times an ogre can save a kingdom from a stereotypically-good-but-is-now-bad type of character. This is just getting ridiculous.

Shrek 3 looks promising though, for those who want to see it.

It's in theatres May 18th.
