Since history is a major interest of the main proprietors of the Comment Corner, we here at the Comment Corner offer this to our valued forum fans: A people's history of corners, comments and the birth of a legend...

Many moons ago, there was a forum ensconced heavily in discussing historical matters with mild forays into other topics. With an obvious eye to acadaemia and also attempting to interest an online audience to discuss the shows it aired, www.historytelevision.ca/forum was a resounding success.

Two plucky young history afficianados quickly joined up with the ranks of other esteemed posters in forging what some have been calling "The Best Damn Forum. Ever." Many of those people came here after the site was taken down and bring their wit, charm and grace. Regina, Hormel26C and SprCForr, a gracious nod to you all.

However, these two plucky young history afficianados soon learned that not everyone posted with the greatest of academic intentions. Some people cut corners logically, some distorted facts to suit convenience and some were outright uncle-fucking weirdos with sheer retardation galloping through their heads like a nut-crunched stallion. Mustang1 and Dayseed answered the call, to push back the bad history, terrible scholarship, misplaced faith in web surfin' researchin' and bring balance back to www.historytelevision.ca/forums.

On November 1st, 2004, Necessity mated with Fate to produce the Mustang/Dayseed Comment Corner.

Such gems from the very first included:
Quote:
Since everybody assumes I'm a war-mongering jackass and Mustang is too, I hope he will join me in critiquing the board as a whole.

Thus, I introduce the MUSTANG/DAYSEED COMMENT CORNER:
3. The "It's hard to talk with my lips on your ass" Dialogue award goes to: Rob Wager for this little gem in Genetically Engineered Food on Sat, Oct 30th at 12:42 pm. ""Limit
Please call me Rob. I agree. I like and want to be challenged. AND I have a great deal to learn having never been a farmer."" Murflegullug, huh Rob?

4. The JJG/Willyboy "Deny Deny Deny" award goes to......Rob Wager AGAIN! Trying to make it seem like his Genetically Engineered Food post on Sat, Oct 30th at 12:57 pm didn't happen he edited it to "z" when it formerly had him trying to linguistically fellate Limit.

The response initially was lukewarm (dicks) but as the Mustang/Dayseed Comment Corner grew in strength, so too did the readership and the honesty it kept everybody in.

2. “Whaaaaaaaa?” Award. Tough one, tough one indeed. My nomination goes to our history forum rookie: flanker. Emerging from the dark recesses of cyberspace he initially wowed us with his now famous “it’s-my-opinion-SUV-rant” and then went on to loftier heights with the new forum masterpiece: “Those kind of posts [anything found offensive] are best to be left un-replied, or un-posted in the first place.” (an answer for mustang, Oct 30, 2004)

Yes! You said that those comments are better left un-replied and yet YOU replied to it!! Whaaaaaaa? Better yet, they should be “un-posted“? What the hell is “un-posted“? Double Whaaaaaaaaaa. Does this involve time-travel or string theory? Brilliant. We here at mustang/dayseed comment corner salute flanker’s early success in forum idiocy!

The awards and accolades followed the meteoric success:

Hopefully you guys will give out prizes to these awards.

Just a reminder don't jump to conclussions like you did in My Raptors thread in the sports section before giving out these awards. If you do though you guys should have a retraction page somewhere. Anyway hopefully I will receive an award for perhaps best looking (johnny Depp lookalike) poster on here.

Keep up the good work.

No awards this week?

A spinoff of the Comment Corner was launched less than two weeks later, The Forum Survival Guide. It included such handy tips as:

Quote:
3. THE OPINION POST. Oh ***, don't ever try and back up a weak position with something akin to, "Well, that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it." Let's all repeat this: opinions can be wrong, fallacious, stupid, uninformed, ignorant, irrelevant, moronic or just old-fashioned bat-*** insane. Stating something is your opinion is paramount to inviting somebody to beat you across the face with the linguistic equivelant of a broken toilet seat. And not a clean one either.

4. THE PROFESSION POST. This is a recent development in the forums, but one that needs addressing. Picture the final scene of Maverick. Picture Mel Gibson picking up the unturned card. Picture Mel flicking it towards the pile of money on the table. Picture it turning over and tumbling down as the Ace of Spades. Picture everyone gasping as Mel hauls in the money. Got all those images?

That's not you.

Your profession isn't the equivalent. It is not a trump and need never be written. If you broadcast it, don't cry if it comes flying back at you.

10. Mystify With The Thesaurus. Congratulations. You inserted a synonym with the mere click of a key. Guess what? It doesn’t magically amplify one’s argumentative thrust nor does it impress anyone who passed Grade 12 English. Your points still require verifiable evidence and lucid articulation if you want them to be persuasive. Words? They can be effective, but misuse simply calls attention to one’s ignorance and pretentiousness. Make an argument, not a dictionary.

Ultimately, the original Comment Corner was heinously derided by the powers that be at Alliance Atlantis approximately 1 month into its life-altering tenure.

So, it is with a love of history, humour and modesty that the Comment Corner takes a moment to salute the original.

God speed good Corner, God speed...
