Folks, this topic has been covered before, but nothing has changed and before I go around from house to house, deftly splitting the butt-cheeks and caving in the asshole with a well placed size 11 Reebok toe-hack of those who don't listen, I'll try once more to apply a little reason.
It goes something bluntly like this: Political parties have party politics and do not necessarily carry with them political ideologies. Also, "left-wing" "right-wing" style politics do not necessarily translate to the idiotic mush-headed tribe you people call "parties".
When intellectuals of old discussed politics, they did it like this:
Here's you:
Every time I have to endure public debate about policy, of any sort, it almost instantly degenerates into some sort of competition about misunderstanding the issue, apply vaguely (at fucking best) understood political thinkings and resorting to tribalistic bashings.
So, here are a couple of fucking tips you all need to understand:
Left Wing/Right Wing
These terms are no more synonymous with their currently associated political parties than the terms "wicked tits" and "Oprah Winfrey". If you want a base understanding of the political spectrum, it refers to the amount of personal responsibility versus societal responsibility for any given problem. Think people should get free operations on their crotches? Deciding who should pay for a crotchectomy would be balanced on the spectrum. So, for all you dickheads out there that don't yet get how this relates to you, legalizing marijuana is a right-wing argument (i.e. the individual should choose if smoking pot is right for them, not society) and putting up the 10 Commandments on courthouse walls is a left-wing argument (society will dictate morals rather than the individual deciding what is true to them). However, sure as Tom Cruise drinks Katie Holmes' period blood in the name of Xenu the Space God, you probably thought the inverse would be true because that's the position of parties.
See how fucking ridiculous you people sound?
Liberal/Conservative
These terms are not related to left-wing/right-wing ideology any more than sun-screen lotion and lysol sandwiches should make up the bulk of hobo's lunches. However, the two terms get commingled more often than director's wangs and Paris Hilton's snatch when auditioning for movies.
They shouldn't.
Liberalism, at its core, is about freedom. Hence libre at the start. But in terms of liberalism, it's about removing constraints which prevent society from reaching goals at the pace circumstances dictate. Conservatism, at its core, is to conserve society's status. Therefore, a liberal view of climate change would be to legislate protective measures for the environment now, whereas a convservative view would be to study the problem and make informed decisions later. Neither one of those positions is dependent upon the political party which bears the same name and neither position inherently precludes any one solution. Liberalism and conservatism may reach the same policy on how to tackle climate change, but one is going to arrive at the conclusion faster than the other.
Liberal Party of Canada/Conservative Party of Canada
Packs of assholes pandering to a population dependent upon easily digestable soundbites regarding policy to make up their minds about what to do.
Leadership
Something this country desperately needs in the form of a Gunslinger-King of old like JFK, Trudeau or FDR.
What is the Secret of Monkey Island?
I read a cool theory on this. The "secret" of Monkey Island is that Guybrush Threepwood is actually imagining the events of MI1 and MI2 a la Calvin and Hobbes as he goes through a pirate theme park. Since Ron Gilbert, the original author of the games, left after MI2 came out, LucasArts got new writers to finish the story but they weren't privy to Gilbert's original intention.
If you don't know Monkey Island, I pity you.

The typical stooges that perfectly illustrate this won't get it. My favorite tactic is when they mash ideologies together (such as liberal/communism) in a pathetic attempt to vilify a contemporary party with immature rhetoric. If these goofs read a book, they'd be dangerous.

I completely agree - the hypocrisy and banal rhetoric of some is astounding at times.
I attempted to define myself on a conservative/liberal, right/left, scale for some time with no avail - I don't feel 'moderate' accurately described my strong stances on most issues, but the values of these political identities seem to be chosen arbitrarily and based on popular opinion, rather than any real, identifiable ideology that I could relate to.
I'm quite comfortable in settling on describing myself as strongly libertarian, though. I don't feel the term has been tainted just yet.

To be brutally frank, many here have no idea how the ideological framework of political thought works. To define yourself as a conservative/liberal (in Canadian context, that might, depending on your philosophical leanings, might translate to a Red Tory) with centrist position isn't wrong it at all - in fact, it's perfectly sound. I wouldn't look to many here for validation on that front. It's too bad that more don't read here as the political discussions might actually produce some real discourse instead of the banal, partisan dreck that usually spill forth.

You know what would work best for everybody? If everybody agreed to quit labelling their views and instead just debated the efficacy of certain policy, this country could heal its wounds faster than descending simply into partisan tribalism. Left, right, centre. Nobody cares what label people want to give to their views.
Actually, I think the more people want to define their views, the less analysis of policy they actually do. "Today I'm a Con, I hate gay-marriage, abortion, stem-cell research and want Jesus on the paper money because that's what Ann Coulter says are right-wing conservative views. Stem-cell research could cure Parkinsons? Wow, wouldn't that be nice. Too bad I'm a Con."

I'm like BN. I don't label myself as either Liberal or Conservative because depending on the issue at hand, I'm both. Hence, I have never chosen any political party here at CKA.

The problem with most people on CanadaKA is that they don't actually know from a hole in the ground anything that the TV or the opinion column of their crappy newspaper didn't tell them, and they deal with problems that make them uncomfortable like a classroom full of six year olds.
I think I've stopped trying to globally define right/left, liberal/conservative. I think things fit more easily into categories of stupid/not stupid. Things that are stupid are things which hurt people, are selfish in nature, and do not reflect any measure of compassion. Things that are not stupid are things that make people more intelligent and aware, do away with old-world ideas such as stuffing people into stereotype boxes and mocking them (although I will use this in a rather karmic fashion if it's needed to make a point. The difference, of course, is that I know I'm doing it), and ideas that reduce suffering.
