Well Fanaholics I’m sure we all prefer Dayseeds stylish swift quick to our metaphysical self that restores our faith in humanity but today I’ll be high up on the mound delivering political commentary and attacking the moronic beliefs of someone we’ll just call SheepShit.

Armchair Quarterbacking: Just recently SheepShit (abbreviated as SS (what irony) from now on) in reposting his usual lack wit kneejerk reaction to a quote of mine added the afterthought that he hated all the so-called “armchair quarterbacking” being done by us non-military guys with regards to all political considerations of our Afghanistan invasion. Its somewhat telling and disturbing that so many military members here that post intellectually about topics they have no experience in suddenly turn 180 degrees and dismiss any civie opinion about anything related even remotely to the military. Now SS said as much about civie opinions (only those against the invasion mind you) concerning Canada’s deployment to Afghanistan. Deciding that our deployment there was a mistake and our continued presence there for whatever reason is a mistake and is no more armchair QB’ing that all those who thought we should go there/remain there. Nobody needs to be a soldier to decide for themselves whether we are doing the right thing. Any belief otherwise is both ignorant and elitist.

Revisionist History: This goes back to the heart of my quote where I likened the US led invasion (and us along with it) was an invasion no different then any other incident in history where one nation invaded another such as the invasion of France by Nazi Germany (A quote that SS very dishonestly twisted to say that I called our soldiers Nazis when in reality it referred to the political master who sent us there). I’ve seen a lot of ill-informed posters on here furiously rewriting history by trying to show that what we did wasn’t an “invasion”. It was. In every possible se...

Okay Fanaholics.

In honour of the new creation “museum” being opened in Alberta and the intelligence sucking influence it exudes with its zone of ignorance I offer a critique of the tricks, traps and logical fallacies used by the creationists.

Their appeal to ultimate authority, their god.

Essentially this is where they say something like “the bible says it, I believe it. N’uff said”. This usually signals the end of even a feeble attempt to argue on their part and its often uttered as though it means obvious victory on their part.

Appealing to the authority of the bible/their god leads quite nicely into another argumentative fallacy of theirs; that of circular logic. Observe:

“Creationism must be true because the bible says so and it’s the infallible word of (our) god”.

“How do you know it’s the infallible word of your god”?

“Because the bible says so”

See the inherent problem? Their “proof” that creationism is real is simply because the bible says so and the bible is right because it is the infallible word of their god. Of course the only proof they have is that very same bible. (They use the same logic to prove their god exists).

If you want to fight fire with fire just claim you must be correct because you say you are always correct. They’ll ask how you know that and the response is ……. You must be correct if you say you are correct because if you say it then it must be correct. Phew. It helps to artificially lower your IQ to their level. Pretend you are talking to your 3 year old nephew.

Next up, the Strawman attack. This is where they present a woefully distorted (and wrong) example of what evolution real is in order to defeat it (and your argument).

They’ll say “evolution says that a fish turns into a lizard then into monkey then into man. That’s absurd. How many fish do you see turning into lizards”.

Apart from them thinking that evolution mimics their own sticks to snakes, water to wine mythology, they th...

Ok, fanaholics. I am quite sure you have all dealt with banks in one way or another and may feel as I do that at some point in your dealings you will be required to grab your ankles for support. The theme and outrage du jour today is credit. Everyone can get credit right? In my student days I often watched bemused as the student pimps they hire accosted just about everyone in the student life centre literally throwing credit cards at them. Hell, I had 2 and the most common response was “want a third?”. Paying students desperate for money on a commission basis to convince other students desperate for money to get credit is up there with getting cute kids to hawk vastly overpriced chocolate bars door to door so their parents won’t actually have to pay to get rid of them, I mean send them to camp. Of course we all end up with credit cards anyway and there the problem starts. We have just had our first financial rectal exam and we are none-the-wiser. Like any good consumer we all think we alone have discovered the secret to beating the credit companies, which is more credit. Paying a high interest on 1 card? No problem. Just get another and transfer the balance to take advantage of that low introductory offer. The fact that they advertise the cards by telling you to do just that should clue you in to they are well aware of that fact and are betting you won’t bother using the money you save from interest to pay down the principle, Harper take note. Eventually you establish a pattern of having 1 card paying off the others in a cyclical pattern.

So a few years go by and eventually you graduate and get a job. Great, I can pay off that high interest credit card balance. A little hard work and self-control and you manage to do just that. Of course you will soon need to run it all back up because you want to buy all those nice things you did without as a student, like furniture you didn’t inherit when you and your 5 closest friends moved into that 4 bedroom...
