As an amateur student of Canadian politics, I have never been quite so disillusioned as I now find myself. For all the bravado and bluster of Mr.Rae concerning duly and democratically elected leaders, he has now shown that to be not only untrue but unwise (for the party) in light of current party circumstances. The party's rush to find someone to replace Stephan Dion was not only unseemly it has possilby contravened their own party policy. By dropping out of the race as possible interim leader and future leader, Bob Rae has effectively crowned Ignatieff despite protests by grass-roots party members. Were I a party member, I might now be shredding my membership card, unless of course Iggy was my choice all along.
The Liberal party has shown, by this move, that they will toss democracy aside in favor of expediency. They do so at their peril. Canadians will, hopefully, see this move as nothing more than what it is - a rush to grasp power at any cost. They have shown that for all their rhetoric, they cannot be trusted anymore than they say the Conservatives can be. They have shown that power trumps democracy and hubris trumps truth and honesty. Come the next election, Canadians would be well-advised to remember that given the chance, the Liberal party betrayed us and their own members.
