Seems to me I hear that phrase a lot. We get the gov't we deserve. The question is, do we really?
Currently, Harper has shown he don't care about popular opinion. The recriminalization of pot was totally against public opinion. His recent decision to implement the DMCA not only went against public opinion but the opinion of many in the Canadian music industry.
Now we have the CRTC, egged on by the CPC to allow Bell to once again, screw it's customers even more, while stifling any competition it may have.
And of course, Harper's now infamous 2-3 month prorogue. There's more but you get the point.
Did we deserve this gov't? Not really.

Considering the disaffection with the Liberals after their "reign of lunacy" and some pretty shady dealings at the top level of that government it's no surpise the vote shifted to the right. Between ADSCAM, the CH-101 contract that cost more to cancel than the original order cost, claiming to have balanced the budget by simply downloading the problem onto the provinces, municipalities and ultimately, the taxpayer, the Liberals blundered their way through for umpteen years because there wasn't a viable alternative. The Reform party came close but ultimately shot themselves in the foot. There's more but you get the point.
Did we deserve that Liberal gov't? Not really.

Considering the disaffection with the PCs after Mulroney tried to sell Canada piecemeal to the US, it's no surprise the vote shifted to the left. Between jumping into bed with Bush Sr, Oka, Free Trade, the GST and completely disregarding public opinion in the last two matters, and questionable political gaming Mulroney showed his utter contempt for all Canadians and the Parliamentary system. There's more, but you get the point.
Did we deserve that gov't? Not really.

So who are we left with today. The NDP? Riiiight, they can afford to make pie-in-the-sky promises cuz they know they haven't got a snowball's chance in Hades of getting elected federally.
The Green Party? Seems like a nice benign party until you read their platform. I think I'll give 'em a pass thank you very much.
The Bloc? Now THERE'S a party that understands national...unityhehehe... ROTFL (Crap, I knew I couldn't say that with a straight face)

Animal Alliance Environment Voters Party of Canada? PETA anyone?
Canadian Action Party? Not much action happening there.
Christian Heritage Party of Canada? Yeah, I may a Christian but nothing fucks up a nation faster than a theocratic gov't.
Communist Party of Canada? Socialist Party might make me feel better about 'em, but not much.
First Peoples National Party of Canada? Good luck there
Libertarian Party of Canada? Something I'd consider if there was a member in my riding.
Marijuana Party? Well I'm sure MOST of you that know me in here would assume that's my party  Well it would be, if again, there was a member in my riding. Unless things have changed, they seem to have some relatively sound fiscal policies too.
Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada? See Communist part of Canada
Newfoundland and Labrador First Party? Again, not exactly representative of the country.
People's Political Power Party of Canada? Who???
Progressive Canadian Party? Hmmm an x-ray of CPC. Gonna need at LEAST as much luck as the First People's National Party of Canada with THOSE initials.
Rhinoceros Party? Funny as hell and actually try to be, but ya really aren't supposed to vote for 'em.
Western Block Party? see comments about the Bloc and the Newf/Lab First Party
Work Less Party? Well, it must be working for them cuz I sure never heard of 'em.

Get the gov't we deserve? The only way to change it is if the gov't themselves change it, and I can't see them giving up ONE iota of their stranglehold on political power to hand some of it back to us.

As it is, there's barely any reason to elect an MP when their party leader
can force them to tow the party line or face "excommunication" from the party.
All the while, we head to the voting booth secure in our delusion that we are actually taking part in a democratic process.
Let's face it, if voting actually changed anything in Canada, we wouldn't be allowed to vote!
