I was not impressed!

Take it from me that the Brit Awards displayed a little too much support for drug addiction on TV. If it wasn’t, the host Russell Brand’s comments about going into drug rehabilitation, we heard it in a stupid song titled Rehab by Amy Winehouse. Even her name speaks of drinking.

Believe me, the Grammy awards observed more self-control than the Brits as far as poking fun at drug usage. It seems it’s the hot thing to do – go to rehab. Even Brittany Spears was said to have gone to rehab, leaving with the words, “This isn’t for me!” Then she came out with a bald head and tattoos. Yep, she’s done the rehab thing and now she’s come out with flying colours.
What are these celebs telling kids today – if you take drugs or drink, you can always go to rehab. Even the celebs do rehab. We forget our kids are impressionable.

Take it from Chris Rock, “I don't get high, but sometimes I wish I did. That way, when I messed up in life I would have an excuse. But right now there's no rehab for stupidity.

A new system has been created at my doctor’s office which means I’ll get to see my doctor if I really need him; otherwise the nurse will screen me – um, I mean see me – and she’ll treat me if the situation is minor enough. If I need to see the doctor, then and only then, will I be graced with his presence to treat me if my ailments fall under the category of serious medical condition.
This could be good if you think of the shortage of doctors in Canada and this will permit my family doctor to help those in serious need for illnesses that require more than a pat on the shoulder. Gone are the days of telephoning the doctor for an appointment to see him. No matter if I like him. It’s the nurse first to see if I deserve the honour of seeing him.
It’s been so long last time I saw my doctor in the flesh; it feels like a decade ago. For all I know he could be diagnosing me from the internet in the Bahamas. Thankfully I have a doctor.

Zamboni

Suzanne Berton ©

Sitting on the bench during hockey intermission, I watched a Zamboni paint the ice smooth. For a second, I wanted to drive this machine to clean the ice brand new. Only a Zamboni could make us hang back with longing in our eyes during the break to watch it skate across the ice!

There’s just something about making the ice look untouched with I’m-the-King-of-the-castle vehicle, which attracts us, even the non-die-hard hockey fans who got lured to a game. The driver must be the luckiest man alive on the ice doing what we wish to do at least one time in life – drive the Zamboni on the ice. Only one person gets to do this at a time.

If life’s problems were smoothed out with Zamboni’s magic, we’d be laughing. Cleaning up our messes - the cracks, fissures, and holes in life – would transform everything like a skating rink with a Zamboni. Life should be so easy to clean up.

As Charlie Brown said, "There are three things in life that people like to stare at: a flowing stream, a crackling fire, and a Zamboni clearing the ice."

Besides watching, we dream about driving a Zamboni, too. It’s just one of those things we connect with at a hockey game.

End.

"The heart never knows the color of the skin".

Chief Dan George (1899-1981)

Many of you probably don't remember Chief Dan George, but I love this quote; it's speaks volumes even today when you see so much hatred around the world.

I was thinking what would it take to stop hate, I mean, think about this for a second will you - Hatred when allowed to grow will erupt into violence as surely as a volcano does.

This made me think about how people could stop hatred. How do you stop suicide bombers and the like. Religion, skin colour, cultures or whatever are used to promote hatred for another group. This should never be.

The only thing other than fighting back is love. Yes, I could be idealistic. Think of Martin Luther King Jr. or Ghandi who believed in a non-violence approach to their cause. Indeed, they were assassinated for their beliefs, but in the end their beliefs in non-violence outlived their enemies' hatred.

Chief Dan George may not have been a King or a Ghandi, but he understood bigotry and hatred; otherwise, this quote would never have crossed his lips.

It's pretty hard to give love to a fist, or a gun, or a bomb.

In the end love has to be the answer. Otherwise, what else is there.

Who didn't love John Candy and his crazy antics! I enjoyed his movies and thought he represented the funny side of Canadians on a world stage. Those crazy Canucks! Too bad his life was shortened and he was taken away from all fun loving Canadians who liked him.

You have to wonder who will replace someone like John Candy. You know the country song, Whose going to fill their shoes?" (George Jones)

Anyhow, I wanted to leave you with a quote. I think John Candy meant we make people laugh - we are blessed with the gift of making people laugh as a people. I can't think of a better compliment than that one. I'd rather make people smile and laugh than make them angry, hate, or cry.

"Wherever you go in the world, you just have to say you're a Canadian and people laugh".

John Candy (1950 - 1994)

Canadian comedian and actor
