If a hockey game sucks they can always win with the shoot out at the end of the game!

What do I know about hockey – not much perhaps – but I do know the shootout at the end of the game stinks. In my book, this single shoot out takes away from the hard work that went on during the game. It doesn’t matter if one side played better than the other, if they are tied after end of the third period, all they have to do is score in the shoot out. Where’s the fun in that?

Last night I watched a bit of the game between the Leafs and the Rangers. The shoot out played right to the last man. If I didn’t know any better I’d say this game was arranged for the Rangers. You know, the old wrestler takes a fall so the other guy can win routine.

In the end, it’s not my call. Let me just say this, when they reach a point in a game where there’s a shoot out, I’ll be a goner. It matters little to me who wins at this point. The shoot out stinks.

End.

I think it was Don Cherry that said a tie is like kissing your sister. In my opinion, a shootout isn't even that good. ;)

If they can't decide the game in regulation or OT, they both deserve the point... and in some cases, niether deserves the extra point. :D

A shootout might be a lousy way to end a game, but it's exciting. It's the best thing to happen to hockey since Gretzky.
Leave it as a tie and the last 10 minutes of the game are B-O-R-I-N-G. Give the win of overtime two points and nothing to the loser, and the overtime is even more boring. This gives the players something to play for, not something to lose. As dull as hockey has gotten, there's not much to it that's more exciting that a penalty shot.
I LOVE the shootout.

I used to think shootouts were pretty lame too, until I saw one live. I went to a Ducks game here in Edmonton last January, and the game was great and the Oilers fought to tie it up. OT solved nothing and in the shootout, the Oilers won. It was one of the most exciting games I've ever been too (and I saw plenty of playoff games back in the dynasty days).

I would never want them to solve playoff games that way, but it's a fine way to end regular season games. And the added bonus is that Canadian players now get lots of opportunity to try out what works and what doesn't. If one of our games in the 2010 Olympics goes to a shootout, the story will be very different than 1998 turned out.

On the shoot out my husband thinks they play for that extra point in the end. If I don't win, I'll still get a point in the shootout.

That could be the trick to see a live shoot out. I don't have that opportunity to see live NHL games here in Kingston, Ontario. I'd have to check out our local team - the Frontenacs - to see how a live shoot out feels.
