ANYTHING but "Innocent".....;-)
by WDHIII on Tue Mar 27, 2007 7:31 am
They began as a circuit band in the late 70s in the cold confines of Winnipeg Manitoba... singer George Belanger, guitarist John Hannah and Gary Golden on keyboards, along with drummer David Budzak and Ralph James on bass were the earliest inception. Tired of the same faces and the bleak witner months they hit the roda, touring across central and eastern Canada where they were EVENTUALLY spotted by an Epic Records exec who quickly signed them to a 2 album deal.
They gladly waved BYE BYE to "Winterpeg", hitting Toronto to record their first disc VICTIM OF A SONG, an instant hit with both fans and critics alike that bore two top ten singles; "Sweet Things In Life" and "You Are The Light" were instant hits across the country and helped push "VICTIM" to double Gold status.
Not bad for a bunch of boys from "the Peg" and the caparisons to ANOTHER famous band from The Red River Valley (The Guess Who) began in ernest.... and many say that COULD have led to their "flash in the pan" status. And as in many cases even success does not translate to stability; in early 1980, just before the release of their second album, John Hannah left to join ANOTHER Canadian group spending tip at the top of the charts, Streetheart.
Enter Glen Willows and drop LOVE CRIMES and you have a STELLAR sohpomore album.... "Take This Heart", "Thinking Of You" and this weeks featured tune helped put to rest the notion this group couldnt function thru personel changes.... done and in the box they set out cross Canada, even doubling up on gigs with old member Hannah and the boys from Streetheart who were riding the wave of their OWN hit album QUICKSAND SHOES!
Tired from the road it would be almost two full years till their next offering but ONE FALSE MOVE was worth the wait; "I Did It For Love", "Superstitious Feeling" and the ballad "Heart Gone Cold" put them into and ELITE catagory.... 3 records outta the box ALL of which hit Gold status.
But all was not well..... band infighting caused Epic to resort to a GREATEST HITS album to keep them in the public eye. Included in this collection was one new single, "Take This Heart" (the FIRST and ONLY video they ever made), that received a fair amount of airplay.....
but couldnt stop Epic from dropping them from the label.
The band "officially" broke up in 85 but business being business Epic contacted Belanger in '86 about releasing yet another GREATEST HITS package; RADIO ROMANCES came out later that year and featured a collection of their previous hits with a new track, "No Mystery" (written by none other than Tom Cochrane) but the band was a SHELL of its former self... Jorn Anderson was the new drummer, the new axeman was Randy Hiebert, Randy Booth on bass and Lou Pomanti on keyboards. A short Cross Canada tour ended somewhere in the prairies.
An unsuccessful comeback was launched in 2004.. their independantly produced II failed to gain ANY airplay.
They were NEVER touted as a Supergroup and could walk down the street unnoticed... but they left their mark Canadian music landscape none the less.

One dime is all is all it cost me, and
I found out for sure You know,
that you double-crossed me
Just howmuch can I endure?
Last night
I was walkin' And I
I saw you with my friend again
Im not one for talking
Least I don't try to pretend
Innocence Innocence Innnocence Innnocence
Oh what a lie baby
Don't even try lady
I laughed when I first metya
How you were so demure-you-know
Now that I don't trust you
You just say I've lost control
You said you'd always love me
Said you'd be my friend!
You had your fingers crossed
You stuck it to me
in the end
Innocence, yes that's all you ever pleaded
Innocence, yes that's all you'll ever plead
Innocence, Yes, That's all you'll ever plead to me
Yes it's all you ever plead
One dime is all is all it cost me, and
I found out for sure Ya-know,
that you double-crossed me
Just how much can I endure?
Innocence, yes that's all you ever pleaded
Innocence, yes that's all you'll ever plead
Innocence, Yes, That's all you'll ever plead to me
Yes it's all you ever plead
Yes it's all you ever plead
Innocence
