What Petitions can easily get lots of signatures?
Ironically, the
petitions that get the most signatures are the petitions that don’t necessarily hold any value. For example, if you compare two types of petitions where one is on a political issue while the other is about a favorite TV show you would notice that there are more people who would sign under the petition for the TV show that they still want to see on TV. There is a reason why this is the case. People think it won’t matter if they sign their name under a petition that only asks for something so measly but they would have second thoughts about signing a petition that is asking a political party or authority to step down or to rethink about his decisions, etc. One reason for this is that they can be scared that when they do sign this petition, they may end up being punished by the said politician or they may end up wishing that they didn’t sign the petition at all.
If you live in a country that enjoys democracy, there are fewer reasons to be scared of signing a petition. Democratic countries allow their people to speak their minds and they are more controlled by the people and they serve the people and they try to give what the majority wants or needs. It is a lot easier for people to pass a petition under a democratic ruling because they are given this right and they are just practicing their right for freedom of speech. This is totally not the case if you live in a country that is communist. Communism does not allow its people to speak up their minds the same way as those under a democratic ruling but instead, they demand or command their people to follow their rules and they are governed as one society with no factions. If a person feels like they are being abused or their rights have been stepped on, that person does not have the right to speak up or rally on the streets because they are not privileged to share their opinions equally as those who live under a democratic country. They still have their freedom of speech but they are not given total freedom. For this reason, many surely would think twice before they sign a petition.
For everybody, signing a non-political petition is a lot easier. It does not need to pass through different legislature’s ruling first and it does not need any political responses as well. For these types of petitions, people can speak freely about what they want and what they think they need and hopefully demand the person responsible to change their minds or do something to satisfy the majority of people concerned.
With the rise of online petitions, we get to see more of these types of petitions sprouting here and there like mushrooms. It is remarkable how many signatures are signed under a petition asking for Batman to be the best super hero.
