Review of Made of Honor
Thu May 01, 2008 3:13 pm
Life is great for Tom (Patrick Dempsey). He's good-looking, rich, and has a best friend in Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) who helps round his life. Life is going great until Hannah gets an assignment to visit a museum in Scotland. From the moment she's gone, Tom notices a gap in his life. His bevy of beauties are shallow and uninteresting and hesuddenly feels lost. He tries several times to call Hannah while she is overseas, but the time difference and a series of events prevent it. Tom is quickly convinced that his life will only have meaning if Hannah is a part of it. He vows to tell her how he feels when she comes back to New York. When she does return, she brings back a bit of Scotland, in the form of a fiancee - Colin; a wealthy, handsome duke who rescued her in a thunderstorm in Scotland.
She asks him to be her maid of honor, as she had always assumed she would be his best man if he had gotten married. He is reluctant to take the job, but is convinced to do so by his buddies so that he can undermine the wedding. Along the way, he has to deal with a jealous bridemaid, Colin, and a host of other obstacles.
Basically, this movie is very close to My Best Friend's Wedding (starring Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts) with a simple gender reversal. The biggest difference is where Julia Roberts comes across as a bitch and totally unsympathetic, Tom comes across as genuine and earnest in his efforts to woo his one true love. This movie also gets the romantic comedy formula correct and adds just the right touches of humour and romance to the mix to make it work. Little touches like how Tom got rich and Colin's unassuming character add real charm to the movie.
I have to admit I wasn't really expecting to enjoy this film, especially given that I also had Ironman premiere tickets the same night), but it was a pleasant surprise.

A clip from Hancock

Check out this clip from Wil Smith's new superhero parody,
Hancock. I've seen several teasers and it looks like it could be very funny to watch.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall review
Wed Apr 16, 2008 8:55 pm
Paul Bretter (Jason Segel), a struggling musician, has just been dumped by his TV superstar girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristin Bell). He desperately tries to forget her, dating other women and struggling with work, but when that fails, he hops on a plane for Hawaii. As he is checking in, he discovers that his ex is there with her new boyfriend, rock superstar Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). His vacation to forget Sarah becomes one disaster after another, as he constantly sees her, most of the time being mauled by her sexually voracious boyfriend. He makes friends with many of the staff at the resort who take pity on him and his situation. Front desk agent Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis) in particular helps him try to get over Sarah. Of course, with Sarah as self-absorbed as she is, she gets jealous of Peter’s new friend.
Yet another Judd Apatow production,
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is as good or better as his recent hits (
40 Year Old Virgin,
Knocked Up and
Superbad). Indeed, this film is populated with actors from those films as well, from Paul Rudd to Jonah Hill. Jonah Hill does an excellent job as an obsessed waiter who stalks Aldous Snow at the resort. Russell Brand, playing eccentric musician Aldous Snow, steals nearly every scene he's in. Everything he does, from his words, to his facial expressions, to his ridiculous body language, is hilarious. In keeping with Apatow’s raunchiness, the film has plenty of crude jokes and filthy language, most of which is over the top and very funny.
The movie has developed a series of viral websites supporting the movie, including one for Crime Scene (http://www.nbc.com/Crime_Scene/), Infant Sorrow (http://www.myspace.com/officialinfantsorrow) and Matthew the Waiter (http://www.myspace.com/matthewthewaiter). Be sure to check all three out, as they have little music clips and scenes.

Zombie Strippers -- You decide
Thu Apr 03, 2008 3:50 pm
Jenna Jameson is making her feature film debut in Zombie Strippers. She plays, you guessed it, a stripper (where she got her start in the first place) who is accidently infected with a virus from a top secret government experiment.
Watch the trailer and tell me what you think. Personally, it looks pretty B-grade stuff to me, but maybe I'm just out of it.
