The Oscars were last night and there were a few surprises.
The biggest was Alan Arkin beating Eddie Murphy for the Best Supporting Actor award. His foul-mouthed, heroin-snorting grandfather in Little Miss Sunshine trumped Eddie Murphy's role in Dreamgirls, which had earned him several other major awards already.
Everyone's favourite underdog, Martin Scorsese finally got the nod for The Departed after having been nominated 7 times previously for either directing or writing. The Departed won for both directing and best picture.
Forest Whitaker took home best actor for his portaryal of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland. Helen Mirren won best actress for her efforts in The Queen, a film about Queen Elizabeth II.
