Sony's urban dance film, Stomp the Yard surprised and took first place this weekend with $26.4 million, unseating Ben Stiller's Night at the Museum, which was in 2nd with $21.5 million. Will smith's Pursuit of Happyness continued its strong run and was in third with $11 million ($140 million overall). The Supremes biopic Dreamgirls was in 4th with $10.3 million, while Freedom Writers slipped to 5th with $8.8 million.

New films Alpha Dog, Primeval and Arthur and the Invisibles all opened poorly, although they made the top 10.

I took my kids to see Pursuit of Happyness on Saturday night. It was one of the best movies I've seen. Will Smith's son is definitely a chip off the ol' block, and the two of them together had several emotions tugging at us.

My son had seen a documentary on the man whose life the movie was based on, and I think he got more out of the movie than the rest of us.

Highly recommended... and I'll probably buy the DVD when it comes out.
