Went for a walk today and found something interesting
by bootlegga on Wed Aug 16, 2006 2:05 pm
Well, I went for a walk after eating lunch today and wound up in the cemetary a block or two from my office (the only green space nearby). So I was walking, enjoying the weather and just wasting time when I came upon some interesting headstones.
I guess there are several rows of World War 1 CEF vets buried there. At first, I thought they had died during Korea, because the first few I saw all died between 1950-53. Then I looked at their ages and realized they had fought in WW1. Men from all sorts of different units and ranks, all mixed together. It was a surprising find, and I'm going to see if there are any medal winners buried there in the next day or two. I'll have to take my digital camera and snap a few photos.
It's amazing, mostly because I've travelled overseas and seen Commonwealth cemetaries all over the world and it never occurred to me to look in cemetaries here in Edmonton...I guess it's easy to overlook what's right under your nose!
Lest we forget!

Reading your entry, I thought, "not many would notice something like that" but you did and that shows you got heart! Nice to see! Enjoyed my visit.

Nice find boot. Question. Were the head stones unique or the standard Commonwealth head stone?

As you'll see in the two entries I've posted since Wednesday, there is a mix of Commonwealth headstones and unique ones. The Polish and French Army headstones were a very interesting surprise!
