"Prodigy" is not a word easily applied but in this case it may be true.... born in Winterpeg in 1973 this weeks Tunesday artist showed the signs early; at the tender age of three she started composing her own little ditties on the family piano. When she was old enough her parents shunned the public school system and instead sent her to the Royal Conservatory of Music and altho she LOVED music and collected MANY awards she often longed to be a "normal" girl. Eventually the powers that be granted her wish, sending her to a public high school where along the way she seemed to give up the idea of ever pursuing her music career. High school over she was lost for direction.... luckily for us the call of the piano returned and she entered the University of Manitoba with a major in Art studies.

Life seemed back on track....

Then during a trip to Italy before her Junior year she was SERIOUSLY injured in a moped accident, breaking her jaw, left femur and severly mangling her left arm. She spent the next three months in an Italian hospital with the fear that not only would she have to learn to walk again but the reality that her musical career may be over before it began. Determined to NOT let that happen she spent her rehabilitaion time back in Winnipeg writing songs that she HOPED would be included.....

.. in her first album.

Strength regained she joined forces with producers Danny Schur and Chris Burke-Gaffney for work on her DEMO CD but almost immediatly after it went in the can she developed an abcess in her reconstructed jaw and was rushed in for emergency surgery....

...and was STUNNED to find out that while she was recovering Schur and Burke-Gaffney has sent her disc to Sony Canada who met her at hospital door with contract in hand.

UNDER THESE ROCKS AND STONES dropped in the fall of 1997 and was met with both critical and public praise; the singles "God Made Me" and "Believer" spent enough time on the charts to garner the attention of the likes of Savage Garden and Amanda Marshall who asked her to open for them. She closed out her North American tour 2 years later with a stint at Lilith fair.

Like many artists her sophomore album was living up to the "jinx" stigma.. writers block was the tune of the day and there looked to be no end in sight til, on a routine checkup at the hospital, she met a young girl named Mina who was diagnosed with a terminal illness. For six months, she found herself sharing the last days of Mina's life and after she passed away in June of 1999 our artist found her inspiration; COLOUR MOVING AND STILL dropped a year later and the first single released was entitled "M", a tribute to her little friend. She followed that up with "Before You" which garnered MAJOR radio play and helped earn her Junos for both Best Adult/Pop Album and Best Female Artist.

During the fuss and folly that followed she added another page to her book, finding time to marry long time boyfriend, Raine Maida (whom she met at a Pearl Jam concert) front man than none other than Canadas own OUR LADY PEACE!

WHAT IF ALL THIS MEANS SOMETHING came out in 2001 and while it failed to produce any "real" #1 hits the tracks got a work out none the less; she sang "In This Life" live on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and it can be heard on the soundtrack to the movie "Saved!", a cover of the Beatles "In My Life" was featured on the show "Providence" and "Time" went BALLISTIC playing in the credits of the movie, "Uptown Girls", was featured in an episode of the MTV reality show, Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, the pilot episode of the ABC romantic comedy/drama Men In Trees, the CBS drama Joan of Arcadia, and the ABC family movie Lucky Seven!

Adding to her credit two "specific written" songs were also featured on the soundtrack of the movie "The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants" and in 2006, "It's All About a Kiss" played during the film "Just My Luck".

Last year "All I Can Do" was released as the first single to her new album GHOST STORIES and while both the Album and single did well and warrented Juno nominations she failed to bring home any hardware.

As you may have noticed, while album work may be her bread and butter its her side work that seems to garner her the most attention. Besides the aformention tracks she also hit mainstream with "Leaving on a Jet Plane", a song written by John Denver and popularized by Peter, Paul & Mary. Appearing on the soundtrack to the 1998 blockbuster film "Armageddon" and was her first international hit.

Several years later her cover of a Randy Newman classic was featured on "Dawsons Creek", an AMERICAN produced show that consistantly showcased Canadian talent.
