I just received word from the College of Dental Surgeons (my governing body) that I passed the NDAEB! A month ago, I went out to UBC and wrote the 4 hour, 200 question exam. I finished in 2½ hours, and then drove home to wait the 4-6 weeks to hear my results. I wasn't expecting to hear this soon, with the Christmas break in the middle, so I was relieved and extremely excited to open the letter just now.

I felt good about the exam, but because it's graded on the curve (to ensure fairness from exam to exam)a lot depended on how well everyone else did... for once, it wasn't all about me. 8)

I guess now's as good a time as any to back up a touch and explain what this exam is. It's the National Dental Assisting Examination Board exam. I graduated in the last class that didn't have to write it. Starting this year, it's a requirement. I wrote it because it will look good on my resume, and it also gives me the option of working anywhere in Canada, should I ever decide to leave the coast. The exam consists of 200 multiple choice questions, some stand-alone, others based on vignettes or photographs. A lot more than I expected were on radiology, but fortunately none were based on the various specialties (prostho, endo, ortho etc) I had a hard time knowing what exactly to study, other than "everything", so I just read through my text book and glanced over the reams of note cards I'd made for various exams. I know I made the classic error of going back and changing an answer, and wouldn't you know it, I went from the correct answer to the wrong one. :(

Passing this exam also gives me 18 of the 36 Continuing Education credits I need every 3 years, which is another huge bonus, and well worth the $350 dollars I didn't have that it cost me. ;)

I'm going to phone my Mum now. :D

Thanks you guys. ;)

dimoreien... it was huge - not the test itself so much as all the stress beforehand that I wasn't studyingenough, or the right stuff. I was just glad when it was done.

Hester... now I only need 18 more credits, that's 6 per year, roughly equal to 2 or 3 seminars a year, which takes a lot of pressure off.

canucker... I only wish I could have worked on you myself (not the impressions though *gag*) or at least watched. :D
Thanks for coming out though, it was greatly appreciated. Too bad I couldn't have made you that whitening tray. :(

kitty... an excellent choice in bouquets. :D Callas rank up there as one of my favourite flowers, and that colour is gorgeous. The diamonds will look lovely as soon as I can pry them off the darned stems.......

Thanks again for the comments.

Good job. Nice to see a dedicated worker. Shoulder to the wheel, nose to the grindstone.
Uncle Joe would have approved of your efforts. Reminds me of my youth. I leaped from the proletariat to the bourgeoisie after years of study. Comrade Zelda was my inspiration. Head of the women's komsomol.
But I digress.
Congratulations.
:)

Thanks, Joe. Coming from you, you know that means a lot to me. ;)

I didn't think I would get more than a pass/fail, but I got a letter yesterday from the NDAEB with my marks, broken down into all the "competencies". I did rather well, if I do say so myself... and I do. :D)

I got 88% (pass was 55.6%)

My lowest was 75% in lab procedures (too many questions about measurements - is it 1-2mm, 3-4mm, or more? Who cares? It's *this* far)

My highest were a couple of 100%'s in Dental Health Education and Practice Management Procedures.

The rest:
Conduct appropriate to a professional setting: 87.5%
Dental Sciences: 90.5%
Clinical Support Procedures: 94.7%
Client Care Procedures: 83.9%
Intraoral procedures: 86.8%

Yay me! :D

Well done. Such high marks would have elicited wonder and admiration from Uncle Joe. Of course I too think those results are notable.
Uncle Joe always approved of womenfolk who dared to challenge the patriarchal agenda of the revisionist Rednecks who claim men are smarter than women.
:D
