Word that his case would NOT fall under pending, stiffer white-collar crime legislation being proposed by the federal government in Ottawa, must come as welcome relief to alleged Montreal fraudster, Earl Jones.

If convicted of defrauding 180 victims of $75 Million in a Ponzi investment scheme, Jones might end up serving less than one year in jail under existing criminal law, rather than the proposed minimum two-year mandatory prison sentence.

Recent media reports have painted a rather pathetic picture of Mr. Jones, depicting him as suddenly destitute, fearing for his safety, and living alone in a rooming house on a meagre pension.

Yet, while Jones' prominent but pricey Montreal defence lawyer, Jeffrey Boro, obtained a postponement for his client's next criminal court appearance, Mr. Jones(out on bail) and a family entourage are reportedly off sailing unabashedly in the Mediterranean aboard a luxury Greek cruise ship.

Who ever said that crime doesn't pay? Let's hope, at least, that Jones has the decency to return home to Canada to stand trial!

P.S. You would think that Crown prosecutors would have the common sense of asking for the surrender of Jones' passport to be included in his bail conditions.
