He ain't no honey, that's for damn sure... But can you imagine the bloody gall of the guy to be suing Ottawa for $10M in damages?
Irregardless of the recent Supreme Court of Canada ruling that his so-called consitutional rights were violated, and NDP justice critic Joe Comartin suggesting that "a cash settlement should be on the table", accused Canadian terrorist Omar Khadr should NOT get a thin dime, never mind $10M, from Canadian taxpayers for his 7 year-long detention at Guantanamo Bay.
For all intensive purposes, Khadr forfeited his Canadian charter rights years ago when he left Canada and took up arms as an unlawful combatant with the Taliban against NATO forces in Afghanistan, where Canadian troops and others continue to get maimed and killed.
Captured by the Americans after a firefight in which he alledgedly killed a U.S. soldier with a grenade, Khadr has been languishing in the military lock-up at Guantanamo ever since. Awaiting a military trial in America, Khadr faces an even longer prison sentence if convicted.
Thank goodness the Supreme Court of Canada overturned two Canadian lower court decisions ordering the federal goverment to repatriate Omar Khadr. Good on Prime Minister Harper for sticking to his guns, and not go begging to the Americans for Khadr's release into Canadian custody. We're already coddling too many terrorists, war criminals, murderers and others up here in Canada as it is.
The ONLY compensation Omar Khadr deserves is a lenghty prison term in the U.S. if found guilty of murder. I'm sure that the families and friends of all those servicemen and women killed in Afghanistan would totally agree.
Let's hope that the Canadian judge, who will eventually preside over the damages lawsuit in Canada, will concur as well and throw out Khadr's unfounded and impertinent action.
