Is crime getting out of control in this city? Are drugs the main cause?

No and No.
Most murders in Edmonton are gang related. The public is hardly ever at risk, as most murders are done ether by gangs on gangs, or by someone known to the victim. They aren't random.
The murder you cite is one of the few 'random' murders in the city in recent memory. I'll bet the cause was not 'drugs', but 'poverty'. 'Drugs' will most likely be blamed, but 'poverty' underlies that.
The media is adverse to discussing 'poverty' in such a booming economy, but I'm not afraid of naming the devil responsible.

The did the same hand-wringing in Winnipeg a few years ago about the rise in murders and the cause was gangs and drugs in over 90% of the murders. The best way to minimize the threat of being murdered is to avoid gangs and drug use.

The cause was drug-induced for the recent random attack, not poverty.

Gangs and drugs seem to be at the root of most of our crime. It depends heavily on the neighbourhood as well. In mine, the most serious crime would be a dog breaking his lead while being walked and running loose until his owner catches it!

He stayed up all night getting cracked up, and when he ran out he tried to rob someone. It had nothing to do with poverty or gangs.
Besides that though, who takes out their wife for their 29 wedding anniversary to the Royal Fork? The guy who got killed had money too, its not like he was broke.

Royal Fork.....is that a buffet restaurant? They have one in Winnipeg, close to the intersection of Regent and Lagimodiere and another in Minot. Good food at a good price, not fancy just tasty.

The reason for much of the drug use (and crime to feed that addiction) in major cities is poverty. And the reason for the poverty goes deeper than that.
Root cause analysis.

This guy was a Looney Tune period.
Quote:
A man who worked closely with the accused at a local company said Jensen-Huot was becoming increasingly disturbed.
"We told police about him on Feb. 27, the day after he started ranting about killers in our truck," said the man, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"He could quote you every statistic about every school killer, their names, the number of victims they killed, the weapons they used," said the man.
"That day he started talking about Virginia Tech, saying he wanted to break the record and kill 33 people.
"He talked about the guys in our warehouse not treating someone well ... that he should go in and kill everybody, but that he'd have to make sure he had enough (ammunition) clips. He always said it was getting the extra clips that was the problem," said the man.

I don't find this a laughing matter. No doubt you both meant no disrespect.
