Anyone here give me some insight into Wainwright Alberta. My next phase of training for the military is out there and I will be there from August until December. I'm from Edmonton and have been to Calagary alot however I know nothing of Wainwright. Any input would be appreciated....

Hop in your car, drive 2 hours East on Hwy 14 and tour the Base for yourself. You're in Edmonton, not the end of the world. It's called "doing a recce".

What is there to do on the weekends out there if you don't want to head to Edmonton or Calgary? How are the peoples attitudes towards military personel? Is the weather alot like Edmontons?

THanks

Haven't been there in years..early 80's so hopfully they have better housing and barracks but I doubt it. Quonset huts that I stayed in were close to the jr ranks and not far from the chow line so I was happy. I played some soccer/football with the gurka's in off times or went into the Wainwright Hotel to play alot of pool usually for a jug per game got to drunk to see and lost the table..lol

Hey do they still have that old Ferret at the gate?

Wainwright is a small town of 5000 people, with the services and entertainment typical of small town Alberta. The military has been here since the war, so you will stand out. You will be recognized as military, and specifically, as a recruit. If you act like a dork, it will be noted. Be advised, lots of staff (retired and currently serving) live in town. The lady in the store could be the wife of a, say, Pl WO or Pl Comd, and you don't want or need that sort of attention. Be a civilised human being and you'll have no problem. Fly under the radar.

You are aware Wainwright is only 200 km east of Edmonton right? So what ever Edmonton would get, we get a little while later or depending on the wind, a little earlier. Dude, you need to check a map.

BTW, to answer your question from the other site: The old PPCLI Battle School attitude of requiring a high PT standard still exists, cold weather makes no difference. So I'll say it now, have fun and a Merry Christmas and Happy Hernia!

You'll enjoy your time in Wainwright. Living in a tent city, enjoying all the sights and sounds of sunny downtown Wainwright. Remember the following:

JD's Saloon - Soldier bar. Stay away from Bridget the Midget. (side note to the vets - yes, she is still there, and still performing the same "services") Great place for a fight. [boxing]

Tony's Bar and Grill - Soldier bar across the road from JD's. Try not to fight on the stairs. It hurts when you fall down them. Just trust me on this one. Great place for a fight. [boxing]

Wuzzy's Roadhouse - Rigger bar (oil patch) Out of bounds to troops. Great place for a fight. [boxing]

Mojo's - Soldier bar. Little hole in the wall near the 7-11. Karaoke on Wednesdays!!! Great place for a fight. [boxing]

The Park Hotel - the finest adult entertainment available in Wainwright. Great place for a fight. [boxing]

The Spring's Motor Inn - Rigger bar. Great place for a fight. [boxing]

Did I forget any?

The Clock! How could I have forgotten  Make sure you don't stop between JD's and Tony's to pee on the clock. Both the Donkey Riders and the Meatheads take personal offence to all those who pee on the clock.

Hey Spr...were you there for that Orangemen's day riot with all the Brits and the Irish?

Yep. But I wasn't downtown at the time of the scuffle. And no one can prove otherwise! PDT_Armataz_01_14

So if you weren't there, you wouldn't know anything about watching them pile into the backs of the Bedfords and being trucked back to camp to accompanying bagpipe music PDT_Armataz_01_11

I was standing on the corner South-East of JD's (used to be The Western Corral clothing store). The entire section was recalled for that little fiasco!

You know the townies are pretty jaded when something like that doesn't even hardly cause a blip on their radar screen. lol

Walmart is moving to town! All the locals are in a complete tizzy. Apparently 5 or 6 other national chain stores will co-located in the "Power Centre" (aka strip mall) to be built at the junction of Hwy 14/41. Half the town is cheering and the other half is gnashing their teeth, pulling their hair and rending their clothes.

2006 is going to be a year of big change in this place!

Funny you posted this now...I just got off the phone with a buddy from Wainwright. He's telling me everyone in town is excited, however, the local merchants are not so impressed. It'll be nice to see someone give the Home Hardware a run for their money
