I'm going to stick with this one for now.

The poppies to me always harken to an idealized age when we have veterans and heros right now who need our support.

The poppy also shows support for our active service personell and soldiers fighting terrorism in Afghanistan.
Can someone else confirm this? To my knowledge, that's not the point of Remembrance Day.

It may be splitting hairs but I would say, not directly.

Quote:
The poppy is a symbol of tribute to the more than 117,000 Canadians who have died in the service of the country, either in the military, the merchant navy or other war-time agencies which supported the war effort. Funds collected are held in trust and distributed in accordance with the rules established for the trusts. Branches or groups of branches can establish a trust fund and manage the funds accordingly. Remembrance material is manufactured commercially.

The history of the poppy and its significance can be found on the Legion's web site at www.legion.ca. More than 18 million poppies and 70,000 wreaths, crosses and sprays are distributed across Canada and overseas annually.

More than $7 million in campaign funds are also distributed annually.
Some of the activities supported are:

-Assistance to needy veterans and their dependents.
-The purchase of community medical appliances and the provision of medical research bursaries to the children and grand children of veterans.
-The funding of drop-in centres for adults, meals-on-wheels, transport and related services.
-The purchase, construction and maintenance of housing and care facilities for the elderly
and disabled.
-0peration of the Dominion Command Service Bureau.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

This song allways reminded me of Flanders fields and the poppies.
It was a big hit back in the last days of the vietnam war with the hippies. I was just a kid but remember hearing it on the radio lots.

Quote:
WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE
words and music by Pete Seeger
performed by Pete Seeger and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Girls have picked them every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young girls gone?
Taken husbands every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the young men gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young men gone?
Gone for soldiers every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Covered with flowers every one
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn?

Who isn't smitten with Curious George? No matter your age, the inquisitive little fellow who always seems to get into one scrape after another has, in all likelihood, captured your heart.

Perhaps his popularity lies in the predictability of his unpredictability. You know that the second the man with the yellow hat leaves the house, warning George to be careful, George is going to get into trouble. And when George starts getting into trouble, he only digs himself deeper.

George can do what kids can't do. He can paint a room from the inside. He can hang from a kite in the sky. He can let the animals out of their pens on the farm. He can do all these naughty things that kids would like to do. He can even launch illegal wars all over the world in order to control the worlds resources.

That George is a curious little fellow. A lover of poppies, and getting into trouble while on his little adventures.
