I was out with some friends today and while we were driving back into Calgary one of them saw a large bird land on a branch, we stopped the truck to see what it was. It was a Great Grey Owl out hunting. I was able to get within 5 feet of the tree it was perched in, I took a lot of photos. Here are the ones I like the most.

I only took a couple hundred shots, the bird was super chill. Just remained perched on the tiny branch what I took photos. I shot most of this at 300mm on my D90.

The Great Grey is big enough, this one was perhaps 15 inches high, so it was probably not fully adult.

From those photos, he looks to be still molting on his chest. Probabally still getting his adult feathers.
