One of my favorite matte painters to follow is Dylan Cole. He's been involved in a few Hollywood blockbusters...Lord of the Rings and Superman Returns comes to mind...Dylan does most of his matte paintings digitally... He also has a dvd tutorial or two for sale at Gnome...

Please check out his website. Just looking at his works both motivates me and humbles me making me feel like I only have the talent to paint the bathroom wall...

PS: Some examples of his work...

My Mother tells me at age three the first thing I drew was a car... I've always been a big fan of automobiles, especially American classics and hot rods... In 1983 I restored a 1960 Chevrolet Corvette which I still own and drive during the summer to car shows....

An illustation I did of a vintage hot rod based upon a Salt Flat’s Racer….. Sketched and painted in ArtRage Studio Pro 3 and Corel Paint Shop Pro x2….. The base hot rod was created by myself as a 3D model in Hexagon3D and then painted over…

Base mesh created in Hexagon3D 2.5

A screen capture of the base mesh in Hexagon was brought into Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 where I blocked in the base colors & added details (side exhaust pipes, from torsion bars, hood louvres, etc) for the hot rod....
The flames and "Moon Eyes" decals were painted using stencils in ArtRage...

Image

Remaining work was all done in ArtRage Studio Pro except for color correction (Paint Shop Pro)

Anyone here that may have lusted for ZBrush (like I have) or Modo but did not want to fork out the near thousand dollars for the app maybe interested in this free and very light app...

http://drpetter.se/project_sculpt.html

No need install the app, you just run it. It also has the ability to
import and export obj files...

Cheers
