Well, these statues were made just after the killing fields of World War One. The public who saw them for the first time all had somebody they lost and knew that there was no glory in war. I think the Commonwealth style of the era was more of mourning and remembrance than glory.
Having seen both, I think that's a very good assessment EB.
The Soviet monuments look like they are going for the glory.
