It might not mean much to some of y'all but to me and others in grand falls, nb this is major news for us!! After losing a good friend because of a lack of seatbelt two years ago, I'm very proud of my town now! Check out the story!
District 10 RCMP credits seatbelt use for zero fatalities since July 2006, Grand Falls/Grand-Sault, N.B
Efforts by members of District 10 of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to make Madawaska and Victoria Counties motorists aware of the importance of wearing seatbelts are making a difference. In fact, there have been no motor vehicle fatalities due to the failure to wear seatbelts since July 2006.
"Over 600 tickets have been handed out in a little over a year in order to get local motorists into the habit of wearing their seatbelts. I am convinced that the work of our members has not only helped the public realize the importance of wearing seatbelts but has also saved several lives in the past year," said Staff Sergeant Philippe Boudreau, District 10 Commander.
Seatbelt use is one of the highway safety priorities in the province. In 2004, studies showed that fewer than 85 % of New Brunswick motorists were buckling up. In the last few years, a great deal of effort has been put into reducing the number of fatal crashes, a large proportion of which involved people who were not wearing seatbelts. The statistics speak for themselves: 45 % of vehicle occupants killed in collisions were not properly restrained.
"There is no doubt in my mind that seatbelts can save the lives of people involved in an accident. That is why the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is determined to continue its campaign to increase awareness of proper seatbelt use in Madawaska and Victoria counties," said Staff Sergeant Boudreau.
