Collect royalties for bottled water, Liberals propose

I guess the local Liberals reckon aggressive over taxation, inferior labour/productivity and poor market position aren't bad enough for the companies there already and are trying to give them another reason to move to greener pastures.

Flatlands?

Anyway,

The Government of Canada (under the Liberals) wrote:

"Nova Scotia's GDP per capita, a measure of standard of living, was $25 560 in 2000 — well below the national average and the second lowest provincial GDP after Prince Edward Island.

Labour productivity, the average level of output produced per hour worked, is a major determinant of standard of living. Labour productivity in Nova Scotia was about 22 percent lower than the national average."

Every statistic I looked at showed nothing had changed and that three quarters of the entire provinces economy is based on the service sector.

I'll accept your apology that is unlikely to come anytime soon but knowit is your reluctance to recoqnise your problems that exasperate them.

Do we have any sort of taxes on other natural resourses?

Fishermen have to buy a lisence. Mining, oil and gas all pay. I'm not sure that we all don't pay with our water bills so I don't think I'd refer to the idea as a "shameless tax grab". It might be double taxation.

Water is a funny thing. You buy it, can get irrigation rights or pull it out of the ground for free. I don't know where NS bottlers source their water but I have a perception that it is polluted. (Because I know almost all ground water in New Brunswick is so by extension)

Regardless, the problem is that a government would consider to unraily tax one industry over another. The article stated that brewers and pop manufatures wouldn't be included.

BTW, Halifax is my second favourite city to visit outside of Alberta.

Water bills are low due to provincial and federal subsidisation of municipal water systems. It would be a lot more expesive to dig a well, as is done in rural Canada.
