I hardly ever ran into this issue when I went to McDonalds pre-pandemic here in Canada, but it almost always happened when I went to a US McDonalds, so it seems mostly like an US issue to me.

I know when I worked fast food as a teenager, we had to clean the ice cream machine at close, and it sat empty over night until the morning crew came in, but that was back in the days when fast food joints actually closed by 11 or midnight each night. Nowadays, I'd guess with 24 hour drive thrus, it's probably be a tougher task to keep hygenic.
