This might be the wrong category, but:

The Ontario Government is thinking of looking abroad for it's future nuclear energy needs !

Of course tendering bids is how free markets can offer Buyers their best value. But when it comes to supporting Canadian Industry and Technology, shouldn't the building of future nuclear energy capacity be a subject that garners support for "Made in Canada" ? Especially considering how much public money/investment has gone into developing this world-class technology to begin with ?

In the name of future development, and protecting our Public/Social interests, I think we should support our investment in CANADIAN nuclear technology, both now and in the future !

What do all of you think of this homegrown issue ?

SEE: http://www.pickcandu.ca/

BTW:
Westinghouse is now owned by Toshiba, but it's still an American institution ( esp. Since George Westinghouse was the Industrialist who supported Tesla's AC system that we all use today..Rather than Edison's DC system)?

I used to live where one the manufacturers of the Candu reactors is located.
Fuck the foreign bullshit. We sell Candus around the world and we won't even buy them for ourselves?? This only sends 2 messages. Either Candu reactors are inferior, or the feds don't give a shit about supporting Canadian industry, jobs and working people in Canada. Personally, I'm leaning wayyyyyy towards the latter.

It's not the feds in this case it is the Ontario government

I stand corrected, not that they have a much better track record.

The problem here isn't so much government not supporting local/national industries as it is Canada's "wal-mart mentality." Canada wants it, but we don't want to pay more than the absolute minimum possible for that product. If the government was to get a Candu, when it was possible to pay less money for a reactor if we bought from another company (that isn't Canadian) someone is going attempt to use that against the government. Saying that the government is not spending responsibly, and that the extra money spent on the reactor could have been spent on something else like Health Care.

Uh... this is a direct result of the Feds pulling support. Without the backing of the FEDERAL government, AECL may cease to exist. That's why Ontario is looking elsewhere.

That "Wal-Mart" mentality you speak of is firmly entrenched within the echelons of government itself. That's the Opposition presuming to speak for everyone. Ask ANY Ontarian and I'll bet you a majority would say buy the Candu.

Again, this isn't politicians doing whats best for country, just politicians trying to make themselves look good to stay in power.

The issues over the budget numbers will always float around, and pissing ontario residents off by sweeping the candu issue under the rug would be much easier to pull off come election time.

Someone start a facebook group? :D
