Yes, because they're confused. Keep your govt hands off my medicare and all. If anybody told these people the truth about what would be cut, they would flip out in an instant. It's always supposed to be somebody else's benefit that's supposed to be cut.

Unfortunately neither Dems or Reps are willing to tell people the truth, so there's all this agitation for cuts right up the point the cuts affect you.

The Tea Party faithful don't give a crap about entitlements. Don't confuse them with the RINO crowd in the GOP. Most of the Tea Party folks don't care if they don't get re-elected next year, they just want the credit cards cut up.

Never did. I always thought they didn't go far enough though.

We did that dance in Alberta in the 1990s. It sucked. We cut government spending, then everyone in government took a 5% pay cut. Services were cut to the bone, then 15% cut from there. We eliminated the debt, and we ran surplus budgets for a number of years.

Enough surpluses that the last 2 defecit budgets were covered by savings, so we still have no debt. The Tea Party may have to come to grips that cutting spending may not be enough. There may need to be some extra revenue generated, through fees for government services or increased taxes. It can be done, just it will be painful.

Someone needs to have the balls to admit it too.

There's nothing wrong with cutting spending as long as it's done right - make everyone suffer - like we did in Canada in 90s. Everything (defence, health care, education, etc) took a hit, not just the stuff the opposition parties favoured.

The reason the stalemate in the States is so bad is that each party expects the other party's demographic to take the hit.

Yes and no.

The Democrats want higher taxes just as a general principle.

The Republicans would be happy to merely appear like they did something important all while actually avoiding doing anything too important.

The Tea Party folks want the spending spree to end because the reality is that the US is about to go Greek with our debt exceeding 100% of GDP. They're the only ones who realize that both the Democrat and Republican plans lead to disaster because both plans don't do anything to stop spending and it's the spending that's the real problem.

If everyone, and I mean EVERYONE just gave 1% of their assets, the debt problem would be solved.
Anyone who can afford to smoke or drive a car can afford that. Anyone who owns 3 houses or has 1.5M in stocks and bonds wouldn't even notice.

I don't know if the congressmen of the tea party are more conservative or libertarian but in the libertarian ideology, they are against pro-active military and more isolationist.
