"Get over it. USA is the only country with the name America. Brazillians are not Americans, they are South Americans. Canadians are not Americans, they are North Americans."

Canadians are Canadians and peoples of the United States of America are Yankees.

I kind of like it when Germans call us Amerikaners... sounds kind of dynamic. And I don't think they are referring to Canadians or Mexicans.

Hmmm.. would "gringo" refer to Canadians too? Or, is that reserved specifically for Amerikaners?

Americans are Americans, and peoples of Canada are Canucks.

i think it's hilarious that yall think "yankees" is an offensive term. American's invented the term yankees, and even the greatest baseball team in the world is NAMED the Yankees. why do foreigners think that calling us Yankees or yanks is offensive?? they say it in a manner which implies it is said in a negative way... but it means nothing. Even when southerners say it in a negative way, the only genuine negative usage of the term, it's still not offensive. it's no different than calling a canadian a Canuck. it's not offensive, it's just cute.

The only real "yankees" are people from new england, and they are the most liberal region in the country besides california, so why would liberal minded foreigners use a term that describes LIBERALS as an insult??? true Yankees are the people in this country that you agree with most and are the most like minded to you!

it makes no sense.

Offense is such an abstract matter...

Citizens of the USA take offense to the term Yank, unless they happen to come from the new England States (Yankees). Southerners really take offense.

Call a Scot a "Brit"----HEHE

Why do the call a guy from nigeria a Nigerian but folks get pissy if you call somebody from Niger a .......?????

I meant no offence. My wee burg was settled by Yankees and half of my family are Yankees. It's what we've always called them. As for the southern and western states, well they joined the Yankees so I call them Yankees too.

bah, we can argue semantics all day, call them Americans, call them yanks, call them US citizens...who cares?

I've heard South Americans get all upset about this before and I just couldn't get it, why be so upset at a name? You're Peruvian, Chilean, Colombian, why are you so pissed the US calls themselves American. I'd recommend you find something better to argue with if you're trying to pull the "US is arrogant" card.

edit: J'peux répondre en français si tu veux

I believe that folks in Mexico and southwards refer to us as 'Norte Americanos'. The emphasis is on the word Norte or North... Mexicans just think of us as being in the North.

Same thing happen in Middle Ages Europe when the they referred to Norsemen, those guys from the North. They brought the name with them when they settled in Normandy, France, and the Normans invaded England.

Hispanics are always going to pissed at us because we have a superior culture. Yes, I said superior. The Catholic Church messed them up bad. Can be proven by the fact that they desparately want to come here. I have gotten in arguments with Hispanics who quickly go irrational about their "right" to be here.

north americans are not "superior". i'll disagreew ith you on that one. we just have a superior education system, and are very skiled at pursueding the most brilliant minds in the world to immigrate here. that's all.

i think that the last statistics i saw said that 17 of the top 20 universities in the world are in America.

Americans are not "superior", however the idea of multiculturalism is superior, and the idea of making world class education accessible to all is superior. imo.

how did japan and germany survive and thrive so easily after the great war?? education.

education is the key to a nations success.

unfortunately education is on the downslope at the moment, however both barack and hilary both claim it will be a focus of their administrations.

The conservatives have shown their vision for education (i.e. "no child left behind") and it has failed miserably.

there is no inherant superiority, just a superior education system.

The Church has nothing to do with why they're messed up. That's like blaming the Protestant church for the Great Depression.

The catholic church invented feudelism and serfdom. They implanted it in places like Mexico. At the beginning of the twentieth century all of Mexico was owned by 18 land owners. Everybody under them were peons or serfs. This is the basis of their culture even today.

Europe moved ahead only after they started to protest the catholic church. Even Italians didn't like the church and pushed them back into the Vatican enclave.

Multi-culturalism is an idea whose time has come because the world is getting smaller. However, it is a dilution of the superior Anglo-European culture until folks get assimilated.
