I'm interested in what people from different parts of Canada have to say about this....

In Ontario (in my experience anyway), rye and coke, or rye and ginger are classic drinks that we consume like water...

But....When I have been to B.C., Quebec, and various parts of the U.S. people look at my like I'm crazy when I order one of these drinks at a bar....

Hell, once I orded a rye and ginger at a bar in Daytona Beach, and the girl gave me a Jack Daniels and ginger ale.....My relfex was to spit it out in her face when I tasted it.....but I held myself back - couldn't drink it though, I just laid it down on the bar and walked away.

Anyway, do you guys in other parts of the country drink "Canadian Whiskey" A.K.A. Rye, and if so how do you drink it?

If I stray from beer it's rye....Wiser's De Luxe with lots of ice and a splash of ginger ale.

I quit drinking about 9 years ago but rye and coke or rye and water were definitely my poisons of choice. For a good quality aged rye (25 - 30 years) I preferrred it neat or with an oz or two of water to half a highball of rye.

I get what you're saying about American's understanding of rye whiskey. Most think Canadian Club is not only fit for human consumption, but think it is high quality. My best retort to a barkeep in Panama City Beach, FL, when she tried to argue the merits of CC.

Me: Get me a highball of CC, neat, and two buckets. Fill one bucket with strychnine and leave the other empty.
Her: Huh????
Me: The bucket of strychnine is to help kill the taste of the horse-piss you're selling as rye, the empty bucket is for when my stomach realizes I drank CC and it revolts on me.

Personal faves were Gibson's Finest (25 years) and Wiser's Special Reserve (30 years). In 1979, I came across a brand known as Captain's Table, in Tofino. I was a little skeptical, but tried a couple of shots. Smoother than silk going down, but then it hits like a sledge hammer to the septum. The barkeep said it was 40 years old. I never found that brand again, so I had no way to confirm or deny it's age.

Great story man, thanks. I haven't gotten into my "straight rye" drinking days yet. So it is always rye and ginger with a lime, or rye and coke with a lemon for me....

I've had a lot of CC in my time, but lately have started drinking some Gibson's. Not the good old expensive stuff though.....the life of a student and all....

Man the shysse I used to get into on account of rye and a sympathetic barkeep (it did't help that I could pass for 18 when I was 14). Though to be fair, I've probably erased more memories than I retained. Ohoh, the damage's done

I used to say there were three reasons for drinking rye neat:

1. You had a really fine bottle and you intended to savour every drop. "Let it tickle your tongue as it gently announces it's presence to your palate"
2. You had a good bottle (Wiser's Deluxe) and you knew what it was there for. "Gonna throw away the cap, won't need it no more. I'ma gettin' zooed and say hello to the floor."
3. You had an ugly bottle (CC) and you were suicidially-depressive. "When you don't intend to see the morning, does it really matter what the poison tastes like?"

I usually have a shot of John Jameson and a beer chaser but Gibsons does go down easier.

Canadian Club, tall glass, lots of ice - lots of whiskey (3 fingers at least) and squeezed lemon on top.

It's not the same without lemon.

I like that. ;)

If I can't get gin and 7, I go with a rye and ginger. I can't drink it straight though - that's way too harsh.

Nice! When I was in B.C. not too many people seemed to like rye mix drinks.....go to see a raincoaster with a taste for the Canadian classis....

I've also drank a fair amount of crown royal....When I was at UWO it was always CC, Crown Royal, and crappy beers (before we started to explore microbreweries)

Heheh, I remember one time when I drank a 26er of CC before the bar....I hadn't realized how much I was drinking because I was drinking out of one of those monster plastic cups like you used to get at mcdonalds for large pops when disney movies came out.....

Anyway, I was wasted when I got to the bar....I managed to buy a drink, but I'm pretty sure I didn't touch it.....Someone took a picture of me with my face planted on the filthy beer-sticky table......Somehow my coat disappeared....I guess it's not that exciting of a story, I basically just passed out in a bar and lost my coat....lol

In the US they're not familiar with the term Rye. For the most part theirs is from corn. You need to ask for a whiskey and coke or a brand like CC or CR and coke. You can always skip all that and just say.........beer.

Gibsons is nice and even Crown in a pinch. Whiskey should only be drank with water and ice, any pop just ruins it! PDT_Armataz_01_32
