It is now.

I just took my dog to the all night vet a couple of weeks ago and before they even euthanize the pets now they give them a tranquillizer shot and allow you to hold on to them till they fall asleep. [cry]

You can also be present when they are given the final shot if you so wish. I couldn't do it but I now people who have and they say it's painless and quick now because the pet is already asleep.

Hopefully it's this way for all the pets because I hate to think about any animal suffering unecessarily because of a vet's insensitivity.

That is exactly how it worked when I put my Staffordshire terrier, Juno, down. They gave her a tranquilizer then while I was holding her in hy arms, they give her the final shot. Takes about a minute and was one of the hardest things I ever did. :(

As I mentioned, I had to do that to my buddy a couple weeks ago. They use an anasthetic overdose, and it is incredibly quick. 10 seconds, tops. No pain at all. I think it affected me more than the death of either of my parents, strangely. Myotinitis and bone cancer was taking her, so I had to weigh my own future sorrow against her current pain and the choice was obvious. Hope someone does that for me.

This is my old girl, giving me 'The Face'. I don't know where this came from, but one day she just started putting her chin down on the ottoman when she wanted something from me.

My parents had to put their 11.5 year old Tatra (named Boris) down just before New Years. They had 2, an 8 year old female too (Tarah).
Tarah was so sad, so lost after his passing. Boris the was leader of the pact (of 2) and she just did not get it. They bought a new Tatra (puppy) and all is going better.

This is not my mom, I just yoinked this off the net, but it shows how amazing (and big) these dogs are:

I had that same experience when I had to put down my grandfathers favorite siamese cat named Simbuc. My grandfather had died already and Simbuc health took a hit and cancer got him and he was suffering. It was hard to put him down because in a way I was also putting down my grandfather. In the end I couldn't see him suffer like that. I too hope someone has the strenth of will to do the same when it is my time.

My in laws old dog was a mixed breed...part of the mix being Godzilla. We used to play fetch with him, using fence posts. The stupid shit couldn't swim though...he actually sank(we found out when he was young), so he'd never fetch anything from water deeper than his belly. I think losing the dog was harder on the MiL than when my FiL died.

Out of my dogs, the bitch was the more...aggressive(?) of the two. She exhibited more wolf like behaviour(they were husky timber wolf hybrids). She was extremely protective(especially after she had her first litter taken from her and then was spayed) and used to 'stalk' strangers who ignored posted signs...she'd slink down, like she was hunting and silently snarl as she slowly approached them, although never children. She never barked, although when excited she'd occasionally 'yip'. the male was left outside some nights as he did bark but would only chase people to the fence if they came into our yard, and that was it. He was about 25 to 30% larger than his litter mate.
