Alright so this is kind of weird but I was just strolling through Google Maps looking for interesting places and I found a town called Little Long Rapids. Things I found interesting about was that there really isn't a direct was to get there. I did some research on it and I couldn't find out anything about it...seems like no one lives there anymore (at least from what I read).

This is what shocked me though, off the the left of the map there is a huge strip that blocks part of the map.

heres the block in relation to Little Long Rapids

This thing is HUGE

You can tell its been altered in to the map...but why?

I'm not saying there is some conspiracy or anything, but does anyone else find this a little odd?

If it was a circle I'd say it was someone's coffee cup..................

Lots of places like that in remote areas here in Canada. Not the strip thing but many places with names but no link to the outside world. Most places that have become "ghost towns" are usually found along old or existing rail lines as well as old air bases.

Our town's been a blurry splotch since Google Earth's inception, yet a year ago I guess the satellite made a high-res pass and the reserve up the lake is so detailed you can make out individual trees on each lot.
One one stripe that is. One the other side of the street in the rez it's another splotch...

I would love to move to Ontario just for the historic old places and whistle stops.

That is a really great site! I would love to go to some of those places. Reminds me of the time when me and a friend found an abandoned barn when we were biking around an 80 year old gravel pit.

Funny you should say whistle stops. That's exactly what they were and why they died out. When trains were steam driven they could only carry enough water to go a certain distance, therefore requiring a water, and I assume a coal stop. When trains switched to diesel fuel these little places disappeared. There are many but there's one on the north shore of lake Superior I've heard about a few times. (Jackfish ?)

There is no strip on "Virtual Earth" nor on "Mapquest".
"Little Long Rapids" doesn't exist either.

Oh yes, I have been a rail fan since I was a little kid. I just about died of happiness when I got a job with CN.

That's the skid marks from all the guys who peeled out of there heading for Alberta.
Must have been an auto plant in the area.
