Christmas has been all but banned in the media and the corporate world and replaced with an unmentioned ‘holiday’. We are led to believe that this is to ensure we are more ‘inclusive’.

Will we be saying ‘happy holidays’ next Eid el Fitr or on Diwali? I doubt it.

But we are still ok at saying ‘Happy New Year’, despite the fact that we have large ethnic communities in Canada, such as the Chinese, Coptic Christians and millions of others who follow different calendars other than Gregorian calendar.

Does us saying ‘Happy New Year’ or ‘All the best for 2009’ remind ‘new’ Canadians that they have not been fully welcomed into Canada? I think it’s as insulting as wishing people a ‘Merry Christmas’.

Surely we should make New Year more inclusive in our multi-ethnic society?

Nobody seems to have a problem saying ‘Boxing Day'.This Victorian-British holiday is so acceptable that the retailers have stretched it into ‘Boxing week’.
Surely Boxing Day is a reminder of the Imperial oppression Canadians suffered under the British yoke?

Secularism only seems to count towards Christians, and it would appear we are only willing to remove ‘Christian’ symbols and celebrations from our traditions, which is slightly suspicious.
What really is going on here?

Eyebrock, what the hell are you talking about ?
Everyone knows the New Year only starts around the end of January
or early February, according to whatever dance the moon is in the mood
to do ;)

Its a real shame what has happened to Christmas, I'm just happy
that I grew up in something different.

In this respect, the application of multiculturalism in Canada
seems to be not working well.

The vision of Canada as an independent country, with a strong British
heritage, keeps getting chipped away every year.

p.s. whatever Boxing Day was, the retailers have completely hijacked it,
and its now pretty irrelevant, except for the sales.
No one has gotten around to renaming it yet, thats all.
