No. British Regulars who made a brief resupply stop in halifax torched the Whitehouse. Canada claiming credit for the act is like the Americans claiming they defeated the French in North America. In both cases British regulars with a small number of colonial militia were defending British interests and subjects from hostile forces. It's ironic that the soldiers invading Upper and Lower canada were the sons and grandsons of the British colonists that British troops died defending.

Well, now that that's been so clearly cleared up, let's move on. 8) Thanks, RH.

Yeah, it must be painful for Americans to talk about the British/Canadians burning down their White House.

No, actually, it makes me happy that you have something to feel good about after being left in the dust by the capitalistic giant that the United States of America has become.

It's nice to see this whole thing cleared up once and for all. I've heard about Canadians burning down the whitehouse a few times, from themselves, and I never really believed it. You know, I think we should all just let the whole thing go, because I'd like to see the brits invade the US and a victory dinner at the white house before burning it down nowadays  . Not to start some big hypothetical war talk, but the war of 1812, the burning of the white house, and etc happened around a couple hundred years ago, yet we all seem to always argue about it like it means anything today.

I think we should go down to the White House and secretly place a giant whoopy-cushion on the heli-pad so that when the helicopter lands, everyone in it will accuse each other of farting. The whole US government will spiral into utter kaos after that big fart and the people will take over and bring down the elite ... and ... the USA will be happy and everyone will wanna be an American again like in the 70's.

What do yuh all think, eh?

I think you need to lay off the crack.

Like many of the city's public buildings, the White House was burned by British troops in 1814. Before she fled, First Lady Dolley Madison managed to save many notable documents from the fire, as well as the well-known portrait of President Washington by Gilbert Stuart that today hangs in the White House East Room. Hoban returned to supervise the rebuilding of the White House. As the presidency evolved and the republic grew, the mansion was refitted to meet the demands placed upon it. Gas lights were added in the administration of President James K. Polk in the late 1840s. Electricity was to come nearly a half century later, in 1891.

The now famous West Wing, where the president and his staff maintain their working quarters, was constructed during Theodore Roosevelt's tenure, after the turn of the century. The east wing, now the bastion of the first lady's activities, was built in the administration of Franklin Roosevelt. President Harry Truman was forced to leave the White House and reside across Pennsylvania Avenue at Blair House while an almost complete gutting of the White House was undertaken. This was necessary because the flooring, plumbing and foundation had severely deteriorated over time. Truman also added the balcony on the south front of the mansion. This view is perhaps the most famous side of the White House, although it is actually the back door.

I guess that's when they jacked up the White House and put in the secret bunker. I knew they put in steel framework, but I thought it was prior to Truman.

Good thing y'all didn't burn that painting of Washington. There would've have been hell to pay.

It was actually Irish conscripts under British command that torched the White House, if it hasn't been mentioned yet or anyone is still interested.

They weren't alone either, there were Native warriors along with the British and Irish lads.

Yep, we'd kick their ass. 8)

You see, like I've said before, we simple cripple their media (we basically control it) their ability to travel (Canadains in the system, boo ya) flip the switch on their electricity, cut off their water, oil, thier hockey (American Hockey is just second-hand Canadian), banks, then we could invade the same states we did in 1812 and make them sing O Canada.

But this time we won't be giving them the terrirtory back, :D

Then we all just watch the United States collapse with Canada as an enemy.

Then Canada is loved even more by all. :P Everyone lives happily ever after.

Isn't there a bum fight going on over salvage rights over a warship loaded with ill gotten gains from the US. The British say it's theirs and the US says it's theirs (sorry but war booty is rarely returned) andCanada can't be bothered to get involved?

I think it's a British ship with US booty in Canadian waters.
