Hmmm that's funny, when I was new to the site I waded right into a thread that had me diametrically opposed to several long standing members on this site.
Yet I was still warmly welcomed to the site.
There have been several foilers that didn't last long here because they got all apoplectic when we didn't take them as seriously as they took themselves.

Aside from a very few individuals on here, you really have to be working at being an asshole to get negative rep around here.

I'm also not entirely sure what you mean by not appreciating different points of views. We have lefties, righties and centrists on this site. Most of whom are quite tolerant of differing points of view provided they aren't accompanied by complete ass-hattery.

As for the guy that gave me my first neg rep? He and I laugh about it now.

Not sure why you'd think internet "life" would or should be any different than real life.

I'm not trying to be an asshole here but if this was something you "had" to endure in the days before internet, and it's something you still have to endure on-line, maybe, just maybe, you might be at least part of the problem?

Again, there have been more than a few newbies that have had divergent views. Hell most of us regulars do too for that matter. That's what stimulates good conversation and debate.
The issue here isn't the divergence of views. It's the presentation of those views.

Now, to be fair, I haven't read too many of your posts because I'm just not into reading books on-line, so let me cite an example of what I mean by "the presentation".

If some "newb" shows up and their first post is say a constructive criticism of Harper's tenure as PM, chances are pretty good they won't be subjected to derision or "cyber-bullying".
If that same person shows up and their first post is about how Harper is some fundamentalist Christian whack job who has a hidden agenda to turn Canada into a theocracy, well, you can pretty much guess what the results will be.
