Gamers who'd like a taste of the big-spending, high-flying life of a certain former Alberta premier now have their chance courtesy of a free app called Aura of Power.

Alberta-based Rocketfuel Games developed the app after the province’s auditor general issued a report into spending and other practices in the office of then-premier Alison Redford. In the report, Auditor General Merwan Saher concluded that Redford and her office used public resources “inappropriately,” and described Redford’s office as having “an aura of power.”

In the game, players navigate a character named Alison through various obstacles, including dodging reporters, in order to reach the Sky Palace. The “sky palace” was the term the media coined for a plan to put a penthouse for Redford on the 11th floor of Edmonton’s Federal Building. Taxpayers foot the bill for $173,000 in consulting work regarding the penthouse, which was never built.

The Sky Palace is also the end point for Alison in the game. But because it was never built, Alison can never get there. One her journey to nowhere, users navigate Alison “though a winter wonderland to collect as many tax dollars and diamonds as you can,” reads a description of the game.

“Can you get to the Sky Palace before it’s put on ice?”

Rocketfuel cofounder and CEO Jason Suriano said the game is like a “next-generation political cartoon.”

“The character is trying to collect diamonds along the way and then your distance travelled is reflected in taxpayer dollars burned,” he told CTV Edmonton.
Suriano was inspired by hashtags that popped up on Twitter after Saher issued his report, including #AuroaOfPower and #SkyPalace. However, the game is not designed to criticize any one person or party, he said.

NDP MLA Deron Bilous found the game funny as he looked it over on his office computer. However, he notes that it was inspired by serious allegations against Redford’s office.
“I think this isn’t going away anytime soon because Albertans are quite upset at the PC party,” Bilous said.

The Aura of Power app is free. Apple users can find it at iTunes, while Android users can find it at Google Play.
