no, not really. I basicly want to know if it was a western country or not. Because it should not make a difference, but we all know it sorta does... Plus, I don't see how an immigration-officer can tell you to marry, while in this country, common law is equal to marriage.

We were given the options to either marry of forget about the sponsorship application. But, I think we are getting way off track here. What was this thread about?

Is it the first , the second or the third generation who are successful? If by successful you mean, they partake in Canadian society in a useful manner, than they all are. cougar wrote: The skilled class immigrants rarely come prepared to sacrifice their lives for the future of their kids rather they come to get meaningful jobs in their field. Translation please. cougar wrote: I have some doubts how one can be saving money for education of kids while working at the lower end jobs. The family budget will simply not allow it, but the kids may take student loans..... Education begins in kindergarten and is "free" up to grade 12. It also comes from the home, where emphasis on doing well and working hard to improve yourself is perhaps the most important lesson one can learn. After grade 12, yep!, it's student loans or working hard at a job planting trees. Just like for everyone else. P.S. are you mtbr back from the dead?

I just dont get it. Why? Immigrants are boost to the economy, not a bane. How many immigrants have you met who brought houses, cars or even TVs with them? They have to buy/rent everything they need to live once they get here. That boosts the economy in a huge way. We have a big, nearly empty country. I say double the quota. My only provision would be that they aren't allowed to immigrate to the big three cities (Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver). Make them spread out to other cities and towns and open the doors. Our country will be much better for it, unless of course you're a bigot who doesn't like brown people... Herbert Grubel of the Fraser Institute has shown that overall immigrants don't earn enough to pay for the public services they receive. What he forgets to say though is that the Canadian government could tax the excess profits employers reap from lower wages that immigration provokes. http://www.fraserinstitute.org/commerce ... ration.pdfthe fraser institute a corporate funded think tank(psuedo researchers) that registered as a charity in order to dodge taxes have no right to complain about taxes and public serves

That's probably because like many Canadians, you wouldn't consider working two full time jobs. I've worked with plenty of immigrants who work 7-3, eat a bag dinner and then work 5-12. Even at $10 an hour, that adds up to a living salary, especially if both parents do it.

You should take a gander at the Help Wanted section in Alberta sometime...there are tons of unskilled jobs here. Costco, Tim Horton's, 7/11, Mac's, McDonald's are all hiring in my neck of the woods.

A good education helps to make it a job you enjoy. Most immigrants get full marks on the willing to work thing.

Brenda wrote: Does make you wonder who raises the kids though... There is an immigrant family that lives just a block from me. I happen to know them. Both parents work, long hours, one in cleaning at a hotel. Grandparents live with them and raise the kids when mom and dad are not there. Grandma and Grandpa are really cute, look like they are in their early 100's and often walk about the neighbourhood with the kids. Nice people.
