I was. Spent time as a black hat in the militia as a teenager, went regs, PPCLI, 2 Commando, back to Pats, earned my jacks, got disgruntled, left army and Canada, spent some time overseas and in the Aussie Forces, got homesick, returned to the frozen north. Still involved in military to some extent.

Hi;

I'm an ex-fitter & rag-picker (aero-engine & supply tech) who pulled the pin in 1990 after 23+ years of service.

Worked my way up through the ranks to Corporal (That's another story) and amongst other things, served three years in NATO with 4 Svc Bn. in Lahr Germany and on board HMCS Ojibwa and Okanagan (only lasted a few months though so don't consider myself a real submariner). I've skiied down black diamond hills in the Black Forest, almost shot someone during the FLQ crisis, flown and sailed over & sailed under the Bermuda triangle, and jumped out of perfectly good aircraft.

Enjoyed my time in the military but noticed a definite change in attitudes when I got back to Canada in 1975. We seemed to have changed from a poor military machine, who had some really good people trying to make it work, to a briefcase-carrying business that catered to an officer's career path. To hell with honour and doing and saying what's right! (Now you see why I rose through the ranks so spectacularily.)

Anyway, I have lots of other memories that civvies could only hope to have and pity them to some extent. I do respect their decision not to join however. It's not for everyone.

Cheers,

ex-airforce

Just over 30 years in the navy, two of them on exchange with the USN and almost four with the Brits on a direct training and operations exchange.

I'd do it all over again, except that I'm having too much fun in my 2nd career.

Look out! Wainwright seems to have the ability to pull people back in! Like that guy on the Sopranos says: "Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in!" :lol:
