A Canadian warship opened fire on Libyan forces early Thursday morning, helping to thwart an attack in the port of Misrata, according to NATO.

HMCS Charlottetown, acting in concert with British destroyer HMS Liverpool and a French warship, prevented the attack by several small fast boats on the port city around 2 a.m. local time, NATO said.

“The boats were forced to abandon their attack and regime forces ashore covered their retreat with artillery and anti-aircraft cannon fire directed towards the allied warships,” NATO said in a statement.

The Charlottetown shot back with a short burst of machine-gun fire and while the British ship also returned fire, NATO said. Neither warship sustained any damage.

This is the second attack by pro-Gadhafi forces at sea, after Libyan forces mined the approaches to Misrata harbour two weeks ago, NATO said. NATO forces have subsequently destroyed the mines and swept the area, allowing safe passage for ships.

The Charlottetown, under NATO command, has been patrolling the waters off the coast of Libya in an effort to enforce a United Nations embargo.

Machine-gun? Probably was the Bofors 57mm gun. Canadian press sucks at military reporting. Anything that fires a projectile is a "machine gun" and all army vehicles are "jeeps" or "tanks".

Ass kicking, Canadian style! Perhaps those fools will think twice before attacking a heavily armed frigate next time! Kudos to the crew of the good ship Charlottetown!

The frigate carries .50 cal heavy machine guns, usually closed up when in a force protection posture, especially when dealing with small boats.

Does anyone see a problem with the fact that Nato, UN and their members seem to love picking fights with manufactured adversaries who have already been pounded and hammered to a pulp by internal war and/or crippling sanctions? Im refering to 10 years of sanctions against Iraq before dubya bush opened up on them because Mr WMD Hussein made noises about his daddy, 30 odd years against Afghanistan, now Libya and on it goes. Beyond pathetic I'd say.

I guess you figured the thread needed some retarding up. Good job of that.
