Today, it was announced in India that the winner of the Indian MMRCA (Medium Multirole Combat Aircraft) competition is the Dassault Rafale of France. The winner will provide 126 jets (with a possible 80 more at a later date) for the Indian Air Force, the manufacturer will provide the initial 18 aircraft, and the remaining 108 will be built in India by HAL (Hindustan Aeronautical Limited) according to the tender's offset agreement.
This almost concludes the years long competition that began in 2007, which saw the official competitors (F/A-18 Super Hornet, F-16IN Viper, Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, Saab JAS-39 GripenNG, and MIG-35) in extensive field trials. With much of the field eliminated last April; Super Hornet, Viper, MIG-35, and Gripen, the finalists squared off what was to see which of the two will emerge as the L-1 (lowest bidder). The contract is to be finalized and signed at some time in March of this year.
Congradulations France on getting your first Rafale export.
