Sorry, in the interest of national security, no military procurement can be made from a country that sees us as a threat to national security.

Yup. If we're a threat to them they should ban their salesmen and lobbyists from trying to sell any equipment to us at all. Save the fun stuff for their good friends in Riyadh instead - "brand-new JDAMs for sale - haven't missed a single Yemeni school bus yet!".

The Russians sell some nice planes.

The problem with US aircraft is the US withholds the software for critical components, thus forcing a nation to rely on the US to service parts of the aircraft. I'd rather buy a Grippen, Typhoon or something else; because then we own the aircraft and its Components outright.

SAAB already works with Bombardier quite a bit.

And they've floated the possibility of manufacturing the Grippen in Canada at Bombardier.

It'll never happen. Ottawa might spend millions and millions on studies and plans and meetings but not one fucking plane will ever be built because that's the way Ottawa works. :|

So just to recap, the American contractor that wants to sell us an overpriced jet we don't need while simultaneously attacking our aerospace sector (Bombardier) is one option.

SAAB with a reasonably priced, very capable jet, a history of teaming up with Bombardier, and the desire to further integrate with Bombardier is the other option.

No brainer.

Canada will break with past history and buy a single-engine fighter?

Yep. The SU-57 looks wonderful. Thust Vectoring, Twin Engines, Stealth, Mach 2 top speed. $50MM a unit.

Not sure if doing this to benefit Bombardier is such a good idea. I'd rather buy them stock direct from Sweden as opposed to repeating the ship-building clown show in the aerospace sphere with a company like Bombardier who simply can't survive on their own at all without government bailouts every couple of years of so. Seems the only thing guaranteed in that kind of arrangement would be Canada ending up paying twice the price for an item just because our own unique sort of corruption and buddy/buddy networking will ensure massive over-inflation of costs.

Half the price of a super hornet so we'll be getting the same number of engines per $. 8)

Most important requirement will be met, not buying American. Certainly don't want to support boeing lockheed.

We'll sell you whatever is still allowed outside of the "buy American" laws.

So, no steel, sorry.

Good idea. You'll need the steel to build a wall.

That's the opposite of a good idea. That's a Trump idea.
