My recruiter in Kamloops all those years ago was straight up. I'd buy him a beer if I ever ran across him again. I was almost finished school, ready to go and he said to not be stupid and finish, then carry on.

You joined in Kamloops too, eh?

liferafts....and with today's traffic in the sealanes, rescue wouldn't be that long in coming. Every branch of the service that involves combat has its own inherent risks.

Unless you're not in the sealanes. Last time I went to Hawaii, we saw one merchant in 10 days.

I'm trying to remember the last time a Canadian warship got into that sort of trouble, to begin with.

Yep, did the testing in Penticton and later had to go to Kamloops for the rest.

Amen to that, brother.

3/8 to 3/4 isn't enough between me and the couple miles to the bottom. I can swim just fine, own a boat and don't have an issue with not being able to see the shore. Depth and distance from shore is probably the basis for my strong preference to stay the fuck away.

I do have an issue with not being able to see shoreline... Found that out being on a plane over the atlantic heading for A-stan... I have no issue being 40 000 feet above the ground, but stick me over an open body of water, no fucking way man! XD

If you were ever on a ship that got "hit" by a Mk 48, you wouldn't have to worry about lifeboats.

That is the absolute truth, even some of the missiles out there will do a number on a ship.

The real reason I joined the Navy was the freedom...I remember back in the good old days of hitting a foreign port and disappearing until I was duty with very few restrictions on where I went. In 2003 I was at Camp Mirage for three days waiting for my ship to come in so me and a few boys went downtown, missed the bus back and decided to cab it, the Army guys at the gate lost their freaking minds. If it wasnt for the fact I was with 2 PO1s and Chief I would have been screwed.

Went to the recruiting centre and you're right, Stokes, not much available right now :(

I'll be going through the process anyway, it's good experience and who knows?the only certain way for something not to happen is to do nothing...

And in the meantime I'll try to get another overseas contract as a civvie. The adventure bug bit me hard!!!

Thanks again y'all

There are still a healthy number of openings. Are you even considering Army? Armour Officer seemed interesting to me. At the very least, you're application will be submitted then.
