I think J is being very harsh on her; the GG is an appointed official. The Queen on the other hand is a Monarch; her position was decided before her birth. You really cant compare the two on an emotional level.
As for saying the GG is weak for crying, no I dont buy it. I dont think she is some major empathetic figure, like some people with Hilary Clinton when cried during the election some months back, her emotions just overwhelmed her at the moment and she cried. I have a feeling J had a poor opinion of the GG even before he heard this. Its pretty much just mental masturbation on his part, reaffirming his own personal beliefs on Michaëlle Jean.

I was going to make a sad comment about the folks who post on the newspaper forums but I don't think I will now... A better place to monitor reaction would be here: http://forums.army.ca/forums/index.php? ... icseen#new Not much action though.

It's comforting to know my boss cares. Hell, sometimes we cry when our buddies die, it's been caught on camera durign the ramp ceremonies. It shows that we are more than just a bunch of numbers to them.

I think both Adrien Clarkson and Michelle Jean have executed their duties flawlessly as Governor General.
The Queen may approach things differently, but the Queen is also from a different era. Canadians have nothing to be ashamed of in Afghanistan. We have served honourably and our soldiers have sacrificed more than anyone else in that miserable part of Asia.
That said, as much as I respect Her Majesty, I shudder to imagine the same under Prince Charles.

After witnessing Christie Blatchford sitting on her fat ass in Aug 07 on the Kandahar Airfield while they carried a coffin on to the aircraft, I really have no use for her or her "support" for the troops.
Bye the way, which comment do you mean is the guy who speaks for the forces?

Crying is not a sign of weakness.

Reguarding the queen and the differences between Canada and the United Kingdom:
Considering QE2 has been on the throne since 1952, she's seen a great many events that saw soldiers die, from the end of the Korean war, Africa, Middle East, at home in Ireland, Falklands and now Iraq and Afghanistan. That's after surviving the events and crushing casualties of WW2. I'm not a monarchist but she's seen enough that I wouldn't say a word against her for not shedding a tear in public.
By reflection, Canada has seen casualties but a long time ago. Canada isn't the UK and the GG isn't the queen.

Frankly i have no use for the 'crown' the queen or the GG. It's an archaic form of government that has long outlasted its usefulness. Canada has been nation on it's own for great deal of time, we don't need a royal babysitter any long and honestly the power that the GG has stirkes me as undemocractic.
Even when i was in the navy i never understood the subservience to the royal family. When i served on a daily basis my thoughts weren't 'gosh im glad we have a queen' .They were more like 'why eactly am i saluting her picture again?
Further as a 'Head of State" the GG in place of the queen has had exactly wht kind of trianing to be the leader of our armed forces, a few doucumentaries on CBC seems to qualify her or anyone as our suprmeme militray commander.
If a vote were taken today i'd vote with becoming a republic.

lily lily: Ok, first, that's not what the topic is about, and second - the POTUS is also the "supreme military commander" and what exactly are his qualifications? It's part of the thread because who really cares about if she cries, does anyone actually think that she goes to sleep at night with heartfelt concern about much of anything? If it's such a big deal with her why isn't she spening time with soldiers and thier families on a dailiy bais- o' wait , i know. She's busy For your second question he like all presdents and prime ministers , no matter how you feel about them, had thire people vote and choose them as opposed to having a pointless figurehead foisted upon them.

I put that there because : " J wrote: You'd never see the Queen crying while supporting her soldiers."
This was just to reflect that the queen and the GG are as different as the UK and Canada... and to get on the good side of West who's such a monarchist that, now that he's famous, maybe he'll put in a good word for me with harper and get me that senate seat.
Personally, I don't get through remembrance day services without a few tears.
