B.C. firm chasing $3-billion deal to modernize rescue plane

OTTAWA — A British Columbia aircraft maker is pitching the Harper government to reconsider plans for replacing the aging Buffalo search and rescue planes with what's expected to be foreign-made technology, saying it can produce a modernized Buffalo in Canada at a lower cost.

Viking Air Ltd. recently sent a letter to all MPs pressing its point as Defence Minister Peter MacKay prepares to tender a $3-billion contract for new search and rescue aircraft - one that industry sources speculate could be the sole-source purchase of the Italian-American C-27J Spartan.

My only reservation is the time frame but I'd definately rather go with the BC product instead of the foreign one. This is a perfect opportunity for a small, local company and they definately should get this chance.

What's wrong Boot? Didn't find a Russian aircraft you liked? No AN-2's for sale? :D

A totalitarian culture treats mere opponents as subversives; a democratic culture treats subversives as mere opponents. The reason is that the latter seeks never to betray its principles, while the former has none to betray.

The best plane that we can get within reasonable financial limits. That means dont get cheap but dont get the most expensive one because you assume it must be better.

If the best plane was made in Turkmenistan, I would have put it on. Unlike like you, I want the best equipment, not the most expensive equipment that a US president pressures us to buy...

We should buy EVERYTHING foreign, do ZERO manufacturing in Candada. Then we'd all be in the service industry, earning well, making others happier. Wouldn't that be swell?

Buffalos are fucking awesome aircraft. They've been around for 40 years now. They haven't been redseigned, but merely upgraded. Taking an awesome product and making t better, making it cheaper, and it is Canadian made with potential for foreign sales. There would be also be alot less money wasted on training all the personel involved in flying and maintaining the birds. Plus with the mnufacturing company being right beside one of the airbases these things will be used, aquiring replacement parts would be quick and cheap, so less overall downtime for the aircraft.

Nothing but perks involved in getting the Viking Air Buffalo.
