Scape Scape:

At the 2:08 mark he states that the average high school graduate earns $40,000 a year. There is a figure of someone wearing a cap and gown with the words: "civilian entry level" above the figure. I call TOTAL BULLSHIT!!! $40.000 a year breaks down to $19.23 an hour. If every swinging dick coming out of high school is making $19.23 an hour, than why is there a nation wide push for the minimum wage to be $15 an hour? They would be cutting their pay by $4.23 an hour. No one coming out of high school is earning that kind of money in an entry level job. NO ONE!!! Skilled trades don't pay that much for first year apprentices. So lets cut the bullshit already.

$1:
The Average Salary With a High School Diploma
Earnings are higher for those with a high school diploma. Median weekly earnings for workers with a high school diploma but no college was $781. That works out to $40,612 per year. The unemployment rate for those with a high school diploma is 7.1%.

You clearly seem to be missing the point I made about "civilian entry level". That average salary with a high school diploma is including people that went to trade schools and or apprenticeships and have been working their entire lives and are near retirement. The video (as I pointed out) is displaying the words "civilian entry level"
over the $40,000 amount and that is total bullshit. Civilians coming out of high school entering into entry level jobs are NOT making $40,000 a year. Not even close.

The video is full of shit. They are comparing apples to oranges. They are showing the pay of an E-1 which is an entry level position in the military with the average pay of EVERYONE who does not have a college degree. Trades people like me who have no college degree make good money, but we do not make $40,000 as a first year apprentice.

Median:
Relating to, located in, or extending toward the middle.
Of, relating to, or situated in or near the plane that divides a bilaterally symmetrical animal into right and left halves; mesial.
Relating to or constituting the middle value in a distribution.

Average:
A number that typifies a set of numbers of which it is a function.
An intermediate level or degree.
The usual or ordinary kind or quality.

It seems you are conflating the definitions of average with median. These are not the same thing as it relates to determining how to attract sufficient manpower in the market.

Median vs. Average
The median of a set of numbers is that number where half of the numbers are lower, and half of the numbers are higher. In the case of real estate, that means the median is the price where half of the homes sold in any given area that month were cheaper, and half were more expensive.

The average of a set of numbers is the total of those numbers divided by the number of items in that set. The median and the average might be close, but they could also be significantly different. It all depends on the numbers.

Here's an example. Take a look at these 11 hypothetical home prices:

$100,000
$101,000
$102,000
$103,000
$104,000
$105,000
$106,000
$107,000
$650,000
$1 million
$3 million
The median price of these 11 houses is $105,000. That's arrived at because five houses were lower priced and five were higher priced.

Meanwhile, the average price of these 11 houses is $498,000. That's what you get when you add up all of those prices and divide by 11—quite a difference from the median.

Going back to the quote:

Median weekly earnings for workers with a high school diploma but no college was $781. That works out to $40,612 per year.

$781 median is NOT the average. However, that is where the 40K comes from. Does this make sense now? In other words there CAN be outliers but the aggregate doesn't change.
