The topic comes up enough that I thought it needed a discussion of its own.

There are a few scenarios I've run into over the years that have to do with an aggressor invading and occupying Canada in part or in whole and here's a few:

1. China. The Chinese do have invasion plans for Vancouver and Seattle and their plans are limited in scope to establishing a beachhead and then securing it by emplacing nuclear weapons on site as a deterrent to anyone trying to force them out.

Both plans involve using naval ships that are camouflaged to appear as civilian cargo ships and to have them arrive from different directions, converging on the target at one time.

Roll-on, Roll-off ships with 5 meter spaces for large military vehicles would be one component, modified container ships would be used for transporting combat troops, and other ships camouflaged as civilian ships would be used for helicopter air support and anti-air defense. Securing a nearby airport with a long runway would be critical to the plan.

2. Russia. While Russia is not thought to be considering seizing any Canadian population centers they have in the past made clear that they don't consider Canadian claims to lands above the Arctic to be legitimate or tenable. This view is based on the fact that the Russians have extensively developed their Arctic territories while Canada hasn't. From the Russian point of view if they can land unopposed then the land was up for grabs anyway.

Russian territorial objectives would not threaten Canada population centers but they'd definitely be raising the Russian flag in places that don't have a Maple Leaf flying anywhere nearby. And once they're established it'll be hell to kick them back out.

They're also fond of the maskirovka where Russian troops pretend to be acting as local militia so it would not surprise me if a Russian invasion of Canada's Arctic were to initially appear as a First Nation's insurgency against Canadian rule. Eventually the truth would get out, as it has in Ukraine, but by then it'd be too late.

3. The United States.

As much as people like to obsess over a violent US invasion of Canada the more likely scenario is a Canadian province breaking away to join the USA and then causing more such provinces to follow. Quebec would likely end up a sovereign nation at the end of such a series of events and it would likely be seen as hostile to the newly composed USA.

Less likely is a military invasion. But if it were to occur it would be best to cover the invasion under the guise of a large-scale military exercise...perhaps even an exercise intended to demonstrate a deterrent to a Chinese or Russian invasion of Canada.

During the exercises US forces would move north and billet in Canadian military bases for the joint exercise. Then, at some point during the exercise the Canadian forces would be disarmed and interred while the governments in Ottawa and the provincial capitals would simultaneously be taken into custody.

The fantasy of an aggressive US invasion along the lines of the invasion of Iraq in 2003 just would not sell with the US public nor would much of our current military support it. I will not speak for what our military is becoming given that the new officers coming out of the academies are being inculcated to follow Presidential orders and not to discern what orders are legal or Constitutional.

Maybe in 25-50 years a new US military would come along and blithely follow an order to aggressively attack and occupy Canada but I don't see that happening now.

The final option is that the US leads a defacto invasion and occupation of Canada in the course of supporting Canada against Russia or China. Much like Great Britain in WW2 there would be so much US firepower and personnel on the ground in Canada that Canadian sovereignty would be arguably void.

The question would be whether or not US forces would return to the US after a Russian/Chinese conflict was resolved.

Just like how the US retains bases in the UK seventy years after WW2 ended.

If it's any consolation I do believe that if the Russians seize Canada's north it'll be Canada's not-so-secret air force that drives them out with their tails between their legs:

The Chinese don't need an army or a navy to take over Vancouver. By super inflating the housing market they're ensuring that no Canadians will be able to live there for much longer. Barring a crash, in a decade or two, Vancouver will be a ghost town that no one can afford to live in save for the few rich white people in point grey and West Van.

1) China stalls at the Rockies. They don't have the airlift capacity to hop over them, and getting an army based on quantity through the natural obstacles would be mind numbing, as well as tactically stupid.

2) Maskirovka only works if you can conceal the initial infiltration. Easy when you are talking about an area that was heavily settled by Russian troops during the USSR days. Not so easy when you have to cross the arctic waste lands, or pull up by boat.
Any invasion from them is coming over the top, or coastal landings. Both of which are very serious concerns as Canada has zilch for air defense, and a weak navy.

3) The US could walk right in.

Now...hold onto what you have gained. Have fun!

Canada's true defense isn't our military, it is the fact that any country holding us has to deal with the world's longest supply lines (we are more decentralized than Russia) and a highly educated population. Unless we want you to rule over us, you won't.

50,000 North Koreans make a surprise landing in Prince Rupert. Within 24 hours they march to the bigger town of Terrace where there are enough refugee applications on hand...
