I propose a music thread of covers.

I have a lot of musical friends, I used to play a bit. I have a couple that are adament that the original is ALWAYS better. Turn their noses up at any alternate version/interpritation.

I think that's just stupid.

Here's a thread devoted to covers. Maybe you think it's better than the original, or maybe you think it's just a cool take on the original...

...gonna start it with a modern take on Simon and Garfunkle.

Depeche Mode put this one out back in 1986. Typical synth stuff of the era, nothing awful but nothing that stands out too much.

In 1998 Rammstein made a much superior hard rock cover version of it and basically turned it into their signature song.

It goes in reverse somewhat too. In 1984 Platinum Blonde did their original rock/pop version of the song:

And Robert Smith/Crystal Castles did a full blown hardcore synth version in 2010.

Original 1982 Psychedelic Furs second British invasion version

Darker and grimmer goth version from Cruel Black Dove in 2010

It's funny you used the Disturbed cover Robair because they have at least two covers on each of their albums and I hate it because they're no good at it.

Mostly I like covers because you get a wholly different interpretation of some of your favourite songs. My first two examples:

Not dating myself but. The original is much better than the cover.

But oddly enough I much prefer the cover of this classic.

Then of course we have this, possibly the most covered song of all time and TBH every one of those hundreds of covers is better than the original. ROTFL

Just heard that Disturbed cover in the last couple days, I really like it. I wouldn't say it's better or worse, my mood would choose one over the other at any given time.

The best covers are the ones that completely rearrange the song. Hendrix' cover of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" and Clapton's (Cream) cover of "Crossroads" are the best examples of that. Dylan even abandoned his original arrangement and has been playing the Hendrix arrangement for decades now.

But my favourite cover of all time:

George Harrison said that he had insecurity issues about his songwriting talents, having played in the shadow of John Lennon for so long, but never felt better about himself as a songwriter than when he heard Healy's version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

That Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence is fast becoming my favourite song from them. So far, at least.

I also like Five Finger Death Punch's cover of "House of the Rising Sun"

As is their take on the classic 'Bad Company'.

And I thought they did a really good job of that one!

I figured this thread might start some debates, kind of why I started it.

Tweeter and the Monkey Man is one that always makes one of my buddies go off. I like the cover, he can't stand it. He's one of the Nazi types that claim the original is ALWAYS better.

To each his own... if anybody posts any cover of "Life is a Highway", I personally think they should be banned from the internet. :x

Haven't heard some of these, will have to give this thread a listen this weekend.

My bros and I like to cruise the gravel main street hometown Saskatchewan in my '69 Impala with our hats on sideways to that rendition.
